Sea Cadets would like to wish HRH the Duke of Edinburgh all the best ahead of his final public engagement this afternoon.

HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, The Captain General Royal Marines, will attend a parade at Buckingham Palace to mark the finale of the 1664 Global Challenge. And royal marines cadets from North London detachments will be among those present, representing the Corps on an historic day.

Sea Cadets' patron is HM the Queen, and the charity is proud to have welcomed her husband, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, to units on a number of occasions.

Sea Cadets also offers the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme to cadets, and many of those who have earned their gold have been presented with their certificates and badges at St James's Palace by His Royal Highness.

Congratulations to the six cyclists who took part in this year's RideLondon in aid of Sea Cadets.

The group joined thousands of others on a cold and windy day for the 100-mile cycle, which took them from London into the Surrey countryside and then back into the capital.

PPO Harvey Shaw from Ipswich Sea Cadets, Brighton Sea Cadets' Training Officer Andy Newman, HQ Communications Officer Ed Meens, and supporters Ed Holdcroft, Kim Scott and Chris Hallam were the super six who took part. Between them, they have raised thousands of pounds for Sea Cadets, which will make a real difference to the lives of young people up and down the country.

Leading Cadet Jessica, from Staines and Egham Sea Cadet Unit, was offered a summer job on the Queen’s rowbarge, Gloriana, after impressing the crew and captain on board during a charity event she attended as a guest.

The 16-year-old impressed with her skills and knowledge and has now joined crew members who are older and more experienced.

She said: “I had been speaking to the captain, and he let me stand by the helm and go up the steps. Then he asked if I wanted to dip the ensign so the barge could go under the bridges. I did a few jobs here and there, and at the end of it he gave me his card and said there was a job if I wanted it.

"I started the next day, and it has been really great. You’re always outside, and I find the river relaxing. It is a difficult job, but a lot of fun, too. It will look great on my CV.”

Gloriana's Skipper, Andrew Adams, said: "We warmed to Jessica very soon after she boarded. Although embarking as a guest, she showed willingness to help in the running of QRB. It became apparent that Jessica had a number of nautical skills, but we were delighted to be able to teach her not only how to apply what she knew, but develop her skills further.

"Sea Cadets have evidently prepared Jessica for life outside of the school environment, she responds to instruction and understands that work is not a clock-watching environment."

Sea Cadets flagship, TS Royalist, is on the way to Lithuania for the second part of Sail Training International's Tall Ships Races 2017.

Having achieved first in class and second overall in the first race, TS Royalist has had a great start to the competition and is expected to finish the second race on Friday.
