Between Sunday 7th to Thursday 11th August, our third annual unit summer camp took place. We camped at Stithians Lake and used the facilities that we have available there. The activities for the week included windsurfing, sailing and expedition training, and some raft building. The cadets also got to see the Red Arrows display on the Wednesday evening. The week was a great success and cadets gained the following qualifications:
POC Close - Windsurfing Stage1
AC Pearce - Windsurfing Stage1
OC Phillips - Windsurfing Stage1
CDT Edmeads - Young Navigator Silver star award
JC Metcalf - Young Navigator Silver star award and Basic Campcraft
And we wish LC Watson, LC Blackburn, AC Watson and CDT Avard the best of luck when they take their sailing assessment in the next few weeks.
Earlier in the year, after transporting our big RIB to Stithians Reservoir on a regular basis, it was decided that we needed a small safety boat to use at the lake. With that, Gill Grant, our Unit Chairperson set about with her pen and in July along came our new safety boat with grateful thanks to:
Coutt Community Trust
MSSC Cornwall Branch
Falmouth Town Sailing Club
Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
Pirate Trust
During July we had two cadets go to HMS Raleigh on a windsurfing course. Great fun was had by both cadets and they passed their Start Windsurfing qualification. Well done to OC Charlie Frost and OC Kiera Watson.
On Tuesday 28th June HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Admiral of the Sea Cadets came to visit our unit. He arrived and inspected the guard of honor before moving inside the Unit to meet the cadets and staff, Unit Management Team and supporters of the roof project. The cadets put on three displays demonstrating some of the activities that we do and the Commanding Officer gave Prince Andrew tour of the unit. During his visit he unveiled a plaque to commemorate both the visit and completion of the roof project and POC Rhiannon Close presented him with the book "Gunboat Command", which is the life story of Lt Cdr Robert Hichens after whom the unit is named. Prince Andrew finally signed the visitors book before leaving.
