Remembrance Sunday

10 November 2019

Lest we forget...

Today the Southampton Sea Cadet Unit paid their respect and took part in Remembrance Sunday at Southampton Guildhall Square and Cenotaph.

The cadets played an active role in the ceremony laying a wreath and Leading Cadet Serzants read the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae.

Once again there was a fantastic turn out from the unit demonstrating its support and respect for all those that have fallen in conflicts across the world.

UNIT EXPANSION - GRAND OPENING DAY

28 September 2019

We're delighted to announce that our new waterside building was opened on the 28th Sepetmber.

After almost two years of dedicated fundraising and support from local businesses and the public, the long awaited facility is finally in place and ready to use.

On the day the weather blessed us and we had an amazing turn out of special guests, friends, family and supporters of the Southampton Sea Cadets, without whom the units expansion would not have been possible.  As always, our cadets did a fantastic job giving demonstrations, guided tours and showing visitors what the Sea Cadets has to offer.  The Grand Opening was attented by some very special guests:

  • The First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin
  • The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Peter Baillie
  • Councillor Les Harris and his wife Councillor Beryl Harris
  • Councillor Ivan White
  • Sea Cadet Area Officer Commander Trevor Price

The Facilities

Sited alongside the existing Sea Cadet unit in Vespasian Road, the new space allows the Southampton Corp to increase its number of recruits, safeguarding the future of the long-running charity and community organisation.

Andrew Moll, Unit Committe Member Chairman, commented: “This is an exciting time for Southampton Sea Cadets. The new space provides a fantastic resource and allow us to continue to support young people who wish to pursue their passion for a whole range of nautical activities.  We moved to our old building in 1996 and it has only ever been able to accommodate around 40 cadets at any time. The new space means we are able to double the number of recruits, making us one of the largest units in the UK.”

The bespoke new facility ensures Southampton Sea cadets remain in their riverside location, which provides so many water-based advantages for young people.

Lindsay Basset CO said: “The new facility provides much needed space for the unit’s training needs, as well as giving young people the opportunity to get out on the water as often as possible.  Southampton Sea Cadets is a place where young people learn life skills and make lasting friendships. It is a valuable community and social resource for the whole city, so it is vital it is protected for the future and can meet the growing needs of the community.

National Drill and Piping Competition

13 April 2019

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Nationa Drill and Piping competition at HMS Raleigh.

Following our success at the Southern Area competition the unit was up against cadet units from all over the country at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth on the 13th April.  The unit put on a fantastic display and performed exceptionally with fantastic results:

  • 5th - team piping
  • 8th - individual piping

We're all really proud of the team, it was such a close competition and we are delighted with the results and the work the cadets have put in.  Are thoughts are already turning to the 2020 competition!
