Project Ceiling - August 2016

TS Otter were delighted with the news that their application to the MSSC Annual Premises Fund had been accepted and wasted no time in asking local building firm Randall & Warner to come along and start work on boarding, plastering and painting the ceiling during August.  In addition new LED lights were fitted on the main deck and in the admin office, much to the delight of CI Bailey!  The transformation has been remarkable and with the repairs to the main deck floor also now complete thanks to Mervyn Watkins Joinery, we are now ready to start the preparation work for sanding and varnishing the floor and painting of the walls!!  Not another job I hear you all shout.

On behalf of the committee, staff and cadets I would like to express our huge thanks to Angie Mitchel, Nicola Hazel and the team at South West Area for all their help with the Area Fund Grant of £7500.00; to the HMS Hermes Association whose donation of £500.00 for refurbishment helped us raise the additional 20% needed to complete the work and of course finally to all at TS Otter who consistently assist with car parking, bag packs and fetes to name but a few to help keep the funds coming in that help to keep our lovely old building looking at its best. Many thanks to you all.

All this meant that for several parade nights in the middle of August TS Otter was homeless! That is, we would have been had not Tewkesbury Sailing Club come to the rescue. We were able to parade there while the above extensive renovation work was done to the interior of our building in Trinity Walk. The temporary hospitality given to us by the Tewkesbury Sailing Club typifies the good relationship that exists between the Club and our Unit, and we wish to record our thanks to the Commodore of the Club, Dr Neil Cooke, and the members for providing us with temporary shelter.

Unit Privileged To Help - August 2016

Unit Privileged To Help - August 2016

Although it was some years ago when the nuclear power plant disaster devastated Chernobyl in Russia, the health of the present generation of children from Belarus still bears the consequences. Each year they are given a holiday in Britain, hosted by British families. For those staying locally, a high-light of their visit was a day recently spent on the River Avon, thanks to the efforts of the cadets and staff of our Unit, led by Lieutenant Ron Matthews, and to the Tewkesbury Sailing Club who kindly allowed us to use their river-side facilities.

Lt Matthews writes: “We managed to teach the children to crew sailing dinghies and the ‘Trinity’ rowing boats, as well as try their hand at kayaking. They were so good we could have entered them in a Regatta!! When not crewing, the children were in the safety boats shouting encouragement to their friends. Everyone had lots of fun”.

In appreciation for our efforts, the children presented the Unit with a lovely traditional Russian straw doll. In a subsequent letter of thanks from the organisers, reference was made to comments from the children’s Doctors about how well the children looked on their return home. Tewkesbury Sea Cadets were privileged to contribute to that very positive outcome.

Safety First Campaign Complete - FINALLY!

Huge thank you to Summerfield Charitable Trust for approving our grant request for funds towards a new Suzuki engine for our safety boat.  Our Safety First Campaign was spearheaded by Jan Flattley who is based in Doha, Qatar!! Jan, a former UMT member, moved to Doha with her family but has still maintained close contact with the Unit helping us with our grant applications.  We are incredibly grateful to the Summerfield Charitable Trust, who awarded us £1500.00 which got us very close to our £2150.00 target.

The balance of the monies was raised through generous donations towards our raffle and auction prizes at our recent Trafalgar Night dinner from; Gardeners Arms - Alderton; Birdland - Bourton on the Water; Weston Cider Tour - Much Marcle; Cotswold Glider Club - Stroud; GL1 - Gloucester; Cotswold Farm Park - Guiting Power; Cotswold Wildlife Park, Burford; Noah's Ark Zoo - Bristol; Dick Whittington Farm Park - Longhope; Cattle Country - Berkeley; Croome Park - Worcester; Rajshirahi Restaurant - Tewkesbury; Miglio Designer Jewellery - Northampton; Alison's Book Shop - Tewkesbury; Bell Hotel - Tewkesbury; Woodys - Tewkesbury; Thompson & Bancks Solicitors - Cheltenham plus all our staff, committee, parents and friends who donated various prizes to support this campaign enabling our cadets to have a fun and safe time on the water.
