Reverend William McCrea from Southampton has been awarded the Merchant Navy Medal in honoris causa.  He has been decorated for services to the welfare of retired seafarers, especially the alumni of the National Sea Training School/College/Centre, Gravesend.

Revd McCrea started his seafaring career in his home town of Belfast as a Sea Cadet and has been part of the maritime community ever since, ultimately serving for many years as the chaplain for the Port of Southampton.

The recipients of the Merchant Navy Medal were presented with their medal by Admiral Lord West of Spithead, in the company of the shipping minister Mike Penning MP, at the investiture ceremony on Monday 13 December.
