The MSSC is pleased to announce that it will be the charity of the year for Foresight Limited and the Foresight Group. Based in London but with offices across the globe, Foresight has a wide portfolio operating in shipping, offshore drilling and exploration, plus hospitality, fashion footwear and brand retailing.

Founded by long term charity supporter Mr. Ravi Mehrotra CBE, and founder of the company, this great partnership will mean that throughout 2011, a variety of events will be held through the partnership to help raise funds and awareness of the work we do for young people as Sea Cadets.

We’re looking forward to a year ahead with Foresight, and the first event has already raised £2,577 – equivalent to a new Trinity 500, and impressive amount for the first event and we hope to continue this success throughout the year.

‘Last year I kayaked 2010 miles down the Amazon. It was well worth it though as I raised lots of money for Sport Relief. Maybe you could think of a water-based fundraising idea for your Sea Cadet Unit and raise money for Red Nose Day 2011? Having visited projects in Uganda, I have seen first-hand just what an amazing difference your money can make.’

Love the sea and want to talk about it? The National Maritime Museum is looking for anyone with a love of the sea or maritime experience and who enjoys talking. They will be filming people who would like to share their thoughts for the Museums display and collection. Filming will take place on Wednesday 23 February at the Museum and anyone interested should contact Andrea on 020 8312 6550 or acunningham@nmm.ac.uk

Sea Cadets is teaming up with Comic Relief for this year’s Red Nose Day which is back on Friday 18 March. By raising cash this Red Nose Day cadets can help to change lives forever. This is because Comic Relief spends all the money raised by the public to give extremely vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa a helping hand to turn their lives around.

The Red Nose Day Team is working with youth groups up and down the country and is challenging every Sea Cadet Unit to get involved. To help you come up with some fun-filled fundraising ideas there’s a fundraising activity kit designed specifically for young people and it’s packed full of ideas to help you raise loads of cash. Congratulations to Lt Cdr (SCC) Don Davies MBE RNR Rtd who was awarded an MBE in the 2011 New Years Honours for services to the Sea Cadets which spans 35 years.

Don joined as a Civilian Instructor in 1975 and since then has occupied an array of posts from Petty Officer Instructor to Commanding Officer plus he has been Chairman at both Dartford and New Romney Units.

Don paid tribute to the support of his wife and his fellow colleagues who have helped him to achieve what he has.

 Also honoured in the New Year list were:
Commodore Barry Bryant RN, Director General, Seafarers UK, who was awarded a CVO, and Mark Brownrigg, Director-General, Chamber of Shipping, who was awarded an OBE for services to the Maritime Industry.

Reverend William McCrea from Southampton has been awarded the Merchant Navy Medal in honoris causa.  He has been decorated for services to the welfare of retired seafarers, especially the alumni of the National Sea Training School/College/Centre, Gravesend.

The recipients of the Merchant Navy Medal were presented with their medal by Admiral Lord West of Spithead, in the company of the shipping minister Mike Penning MP, at the investiture ceremony on Monday 13 December.
