Today HRH Prince Andrew unveiled a plaque at the new Derwenthaugh Sea Cadet Training Centre (SCTC)! Sea Cadet volunteers worked tirelessly to raise the £650,000 needed to build the Derwenthaugh SCTC, which is based at the Derwenthaugh Marina in Newcastle upon Tyne. The fundraising team was headed up by volunteer Mr Victor Spong MBE.

The training centre opened on Friday 1 November 2013, and already has seen hundreds of local Sea Cadets use the training centre to learn how to sail, kayak, canoe, windsurf as well as a host of other waterborne activities.

Derwenthaugh Sea Cadet Training Centre Principal, Lt Cdr (SCC) Alfie Simpson MBE says "This new boating station means the world to us! We have all worked so hard to fundraise and manage the new build, and we are delighted that HRH Prince Andrew is unveiling a plaque."

A ROYAL FAREWELL FOR OUR FLAGSHIP

On 20 November, our flagship was treated to a farewell fit for a queen, as she sailed into Portsmouth for the final time.

TS Royalist received cheers and Mexican waves from cadets and onlookers as she sailed past Fort Blockhouse, with the Paying Off pennant flying triumphantly in the air.

Over 100 cadets, volunteers, staff and supporters gathered for her farewell ceremony, with speeches from Guest of Honour Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope GCB OBE DL, President of MSSC, and Lt (SCC) Angie Morris RNR Commanding Officer of TS Royalist.

Leading Cadet Gareth from Northern Ireland District was in for a surprise when he was presented with the Martin Henwood trophy by Captain Sea Cadets Jonathan Holloway. he was awarded after demonstrating the best Sea Cadets qualities in the year whilst on board TS Royalist.

As Captain of the ship Angie Morris described, "the day has been one of mixed emotions. We are very sad to see the old ship go, but excited for the new ship next Spring." Our new flagship, named after TS Royalist in her honour, will be launched ready for cadets in the new sailing season.

TS Royalist, Sea Cadets faithful flagship, will sail into Gosport for the ship’s decommissioning ceremony on Thursday 20 November. Hundreds of Sea Cadets will gather at Petrol Pier to say farewell to the 43 year old ship that has taken 30,000 cadets on an offshore voyage they will never forget.

TS Royalist was commissioned 1971 by HRH The Princess Royal and built by Groves and Gutteridge Ltd in Cowes. Since then the ship has sailed 212,850 nautical miles – nine times around the world, taking 900 Sea Cadets on an offshore voyage every year.  In 1971, TS Royalist received the Lloyd’s Register Yacht Award for the ‘best constructed, best designed and best equipped vessel for its purpose.’

A new 21st Century flagship is currently being built at Spanish shipyard Astilleros Gondan S.A, to replace TS Royalist, to ensure future generations of Sea Cadets can benefit from an offshore experience.
