TS Royalist made headlines when it returned to the UK after success in the 2017 Tall Ships Races.

Sea Cadets' flagship made its way down the Thames yesterday (Wednesday 16 August) for a victory sail, culminating in Tower Bridge raising.

It follows TS Royalist becoming the first British ship in 31 years to win Sail Training International's Tall Ships Races – a fantastic feat on its own, without taking into consideration it was TS Royalist's first race and the crew was mostly made up of teenagers.

Sea Cadets yesterday welcomed BBC London and London Live on board TS Royalist, with cadets and volunteers interviewed by journalists. Sea Cadets has launched a campaign to teach the public about the importance of staying 'water savvy' this summer. Sea Cadets’ Water Savvy campaign highlights the importance of staying safe in, on and around the water, and making others aware of the dangers.

There are a number of things you can do to ensure you, your family and your friends stay safe. When swimming in open water, stay close to the shore, make sure you are appropriately dressed, and let someone know where you’re going. If you fall in accidentally, cold water shock can be deadly and it’s vital you do not swim or try to get out. Instead, focus on floating and keeping your airway above the water.

Sea Cadets' very own TS Royalist has made history by winning The Tall Ships Races 2017.

The flag ship was first overall and first in class and will now return to the UK with a haul of trophies. Amazingly, this was the first race the new TS Royalist has taken part in.

Cadets joined TS Royalist for different stages, resulting in dozens of young people enjoying the experience of a lifetime. They visited countries such as Poland, Finland and Sweden, and met people from across Europe.

Cadets were honoured to be part of an historic day as HRH the Duke of Edinburgh attended his final public engagement at Buckingham Palace.

Ten royal marines cadets from Waltham Forest, Haringey, and Hornchurch and Upminster detachments were at the 1664 Global Challenge Parade this afternoon.

The event was the final one which HRH the Duke of Edinburgh will attend in an official capacity, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

Sea Cadets would like to wish His Royal Highness a very happy retirement.

Sea Cadets would like to wish HRH the Duke of Edinburgh all the best ahead of his final public engagement this afternoon.

HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, The Captain General Royal Marines, will attend a parade at Buckingham Palace to mark the finale of the 1664 Global Challenge. And royal marines cadets from North London detachments will be among those present, representing the Corps on an historic day.

Sea Cadets' patron is HM the Queen, and the charity is proud to have welcomed her husband, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, to units on a number of occasions.

Sea Cadets also offers the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme to cadets, and many of those who have earned their gold have been presented with their certificates and badges at St James's Palace by His Royal Highness.
