Last weekend, 100 cadets from North West Area took part in the International Merseyside River Festival. Cadets practised their displays in Physical Training, Semaphore and Field Gun for months in the lead up to the three day event, which attracts up to 200,000 visitors a year.

Despite the wind putting a stop to the Window Ladder display on Saturday, Tameside Unit cadets braved the heights on Sunday in glorious sunshine, impressing the crowds of spectators who gathered to watch.

A huge well done to all cadets and volunteers who worked so hard at this huge event!

Josh Williamson, 12, is a finalist for the Guy Evans Young Hero of the Year Award at St John’s Ambulance First Aid Award Ceremony, for saving his 57-year-old father life when he suffered a heart attack in November 2014 when Josh was 11 years old. Josh says: ‘I was worried but I knew I had to do something quickly as Dad went into cardiac arrest. I'd had first-aid training at Sea Cadets a few months earlier so I had an idea what to do. I started CPR and dialled 999 at the same time.’

Congratulations to Wallasey Sea Cadets and HMS Astute for being offered the ‘Freedom of the Borough’. The award was accepted by Wirral Borough Council for the close links between the borough, the submarine and the Sea Cadet unit.

It means the crews and cadets would be granted the "right, privilege, honour and distinction" of marching through the streets of Wirral on all ceremonial occasions with drums beating, bands playing and colours flying.

Wallasey Sea Cadet Unit is the oldest on Merseyside and became affiliated to HMS Astute, which was the newest vessel at the time.

Sea Cadets new flagship has been officially named and commissioned by HRH The Princess Royal today in London.

Over 40 years ago, HRH The Princess Royal named our former flagship TS Royalist. We were delighted to welcome her back again to name our brand new ship, designed to be an even better sail training experience. 

One hundred cadets from all over the country travelled to take part in this exciting event, which included an inspection of the cadets by The Princess Royal, songs from Sefton Sea Cadets Glee Club and a performance from the Massed Band of the Sea Cadets Corps. POC Charlie, Navy Board Cadet for Southern Area, volunteered to read the Sea Cadets prayer in front of the 150 guests. He said: "I felt honoured to read the prayer. Being in Sea Cadets is an amazing experience and gives you a real sense of pride."

Sea Cadets across the UK are counting down to the official Naming of the new flagship, by HRH The Princess Royal tomorrow, Friday 29 May at Canary Wharf, London.

HRH The Princess Royal will honour the vessel by naming it TS Royalist, as she did the former vessel 44 years ago in 1971. Joining HRH will be the Chaplain of the Fleet, The Venerable Ian Wheatley QHC RN who will formally commission the ship into service and the ship is being blessed by the Bishop of London, Rt Revd and Rt Hon Richard Chartres KCVO.

Helping the festivities along will be over 100 young cadets and the major donors and supporters who have been instrumental in helping the charity raise £4.8 million to build the new ship. It's an incredible achievement and one which Sea Cadets are very proud of.
