Sea Cadet wins Duke of Westminster Award

Sea Cadet wins Duke of Westminster Award

July 2012

Midshipman Lloyd Glanville has been named as the winner of the CVQO's Duke of Westminster Award.  Attending a lunch and awards ceremony at Ironmongers' Hall in London, Lloyd was presented with the Duke of Westminster Award by Admiral the Right Honourable the Lord West of Spithead for his commitment to the Sea Cadets and his community.

The Duke of Westminster Award is an annual competition organised by the CVQO to recognise its most outstanding learners.  Lloyd was selected from over 20,000 eligible CVQO learners nationwide.

Of CVQO’s work, Lord West said, “50,000 people’s lives have changed for ever as result of the educational opportunities this charity has made available them. At the time of engaging with CVQO 20,000 of those young people had no GCSEs and many had little prospect of a secure future in the workplace. CVQO helped change that bleak outlook and the vast majority have since gone on to higher and further education and into work.”

Sea Cadets Celebrate 156 years!

The Saturdays, James Cracknell, Gary Neville, Helen Skelton, Barney Harwood and Jessie Ware are just some who have voiced their support for Sea Cadets with birthday messages as it celebrates its 156th anniversary on June 25 2012.

Sea Cadets helped HM The Queen celebrate her Diamond Jubilee earlier this month with a 55 strong flotilla in the Thames Pageant and beacons being lit across the country, and now it’s their turn to celebrate.

We’ve been inspiring and challenging young people through nautical adventure for 156 years and we are thrilled that so many stars have wished us Happy Birthday. Sea Cadets across the country will be baking a specially designed Gala cake recipe courtesy of Fiona Cairns in celebration and stars will be tweeting congratulations throughout the day.

Said Helen Skelton “I love a challenge from time to time but you guys face them daily with pride, passion and perseverance.  What a great organisation.  Big birthday wishes to you all!”

Diamond Jubilee Celebration!

Diamond Jubilee Celebration!

It was a great weekend of celebration and Sea Cadets were at the fore. Working as one Corps we provided amazing support to our Patron HM The Queen and offered hundreds of Sea Cadets an experience they will cherish for ever. In so doing we secured an incredible level of awareness for the great work we do as a national organisation.

Whether you were part of, or behind the scenes of the 55 Trinity 500 boats that led the royal barge, each carrying a flag of the Commonwealth, on Sea Cadet flagship TS Royalist, cheering from Westminster Bridge at the Pageant, at the concert at Buckingham Palace, lighting one of the many Beacons around the country, leading the prayers at St Paul's or having lunch with HM The Queen at Westminster Hall, a huge thank you from all of us to you for the part you played in making this a spectacular weekend for Sea Cadets!
