Sea Cadets from across London and Essex were presented with prestigious Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards at the fourth annual awards event held at the Great Hall in Kensington on Monday 21 March.

Ninety nine young achievers aged 11-25, nominated by their peers and selected for a variety of achievements, received a medallion, framed certificate and cheque for £200. 19 volunteers were also celebrated for demonstrating, in an outstanding way, an ability to motivate young people.

Captain Mark Windsor RN, Captain Sea Cadets said about the event “It was a great privilege to be part of such a wonderful celebration of youth achievement and volunteer leadership. This could only be possible as a result of the marvellous support of the Jack Petchey Foundation. We are very lucky in London and Essex to have the Achievement Awards to celebrate our young people. My post covers the whole of the UK and there is nothing like it for Sea Cadets elsewhere. Jack Petchey is a legend.”

Congratulations to Hornchurch & Upminster Sea Cadet, Petty Officer Cadet Bradley Baker, 17, who has been appointed one of three Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets for 2011/2012 by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir David Brewer, the Queen’s Representative in London. 

The Lord-Lieutenant appoints young people from each of the Cadet Forces to serve for one year as Lord Lieutenants Cadets. It is an incredible honour to be chosen and offer a great opportunity to accompany the Lord Lieutenant on his duties with Royal Visits and other special engagements.

Petty Officer Cadet Baker said “I am very honoured to be appointed as the Lord Lieutenant’s Sea Cadet for 2011.  I have been in Hornchurch Sea Cadets for over six years now and have enjoyed every moment of it.”

The wait is nearly over for Woking Sea Cadets. The new build is well underway and it looks amazing!  This £1.7 million project, funded by Woking Borough Council, will benefit the whole community and give a much needed boost to Woking and Surrey District Sea Cadets. Its a multi purpose community facility that will be run by Dianthus Trading Company on behalf of and for Woking Sea Cadets. This unique approach is the very first example of a Community Interest Company (CIC) being formed in relation to a Sea Cadet Unit.

Royal Marines Cadets from across the UK competed to be the best Royal Marines Cadet Detachment in the country at this year’s competition. Cadets took part in six timed evolutions including map reading, observations and first aid and a night navigation exercise on day one. After a night spent under the stars they endured a four mile run followed by an assault course, truck push and log run.

Thanks to everyone at Commando Training Centre, Royal Marines, Lympstone, for their fantastic welcome and glorious weather.

Well done to Eastbourne RMC, crowned overall winners and congratulations to all who took part.

As World Book Night (Saturday 5 March) approaches, the charity is preparing to send out a new batch of titles to inspire seafarers across the globe in ports from Rotterdam to Singapore. World Book Night is the biggest ever free book giveaway in the UK.  20,000 volunteers will give away a million books. Taking this event to the seas will be The Marine Society which will pack up 300 books specially selected for their appeal to seafarers.

Mark Jackson, book services manager at the charity says,

“We know better than anyone else what seafarers like to read and last year dispatched 346 libraries to 319 vessels and 27 installations world wide. We’ve chosen a selection of titles we believe will inspire and entertain our readers while they are far from home”

Closer to home, look out for free copies of books on Saturday night when people across the country hand out the books that mean the most to them!
