Queens Baton Bearers

Queens Baton Bearers

The unit would like to say a huge well done to CPO John Macdonald and Able Cadet Robyn Gurney, who both carried the Queens baton through Saltcoats. Images have been uploaded to our gallery. The baton run was a huge success in North Ayrshire and it certainly brought the community together to celebrate the occasion, there was a brilliant turn out on the day and weather was perfect. The baton finished off its journey in Ardrossan where in true North Ayrshire fashion in was celebrated with a huge party, with an appearance from the one and only 'Red Hot Chili Pipers'.

The unit would also like to give a big thanks to all the cadets and parents of cadets who turned out to watch the members of our team running with the baton.

Victory at Area Rowing

Victory at Area Rowing

On the 8th of June 4 teams of Cadets from Ardrossan headed to Greenock Sea Cadets Boating station to take part in the Northern Area Rowing regatta. This event brings together all of the winning teams from each district in Northern Area which covers the whole of Scotland, Northern England, and Northern Ireland.

The teams each raced three times against different crews to prove their strength, the Girls Junior, Girls Open, and Boys Open all managed to secure gold medals. This means they can now say they are the best rowing teams in Northern Area. Not only that though, the gold medal also means that each team will be travelling to London in early September to take part in the National Rowing Regatta, which incorporates every Sea Cadet area in the UK to give our Cadets a chance to battle it out for the honour of being NATIONAL Champions.

Girls Junior

Girls Junior: Hughes, Holmes, Gribben L, McCallum, Cooper, Logan.

Boys Senior

Boys Open: Dunn, Falconer, Brown, Dickson, Agnew, McGhee.

Girls Open

Girls Open: Gribben S, Waddell, Wales, McCreadie, Guilfoyle, Gurney.

The Unit are so proud of the determination that our Cadets showed on the day and it proves that their hard work and dedication can get them further than the unit has ever been before.

It was unfortunate for our other team, the Boys Junior, who did manage to secure a silver medal but were just unlucky to get beaten by less than a boat length after a re-run of their previous race, don't worry, You'll get them next year.

The Unit also won the trophy for the Unit gaining the most points at the event, which means we took home 4 out of 5 available trophy's!

Well DONE MIGHTY GANNETS!

David Passes Out

David Passes Out

David Edgar a former cadet of Ardrossan Unit, who has been in the unit since he was only 10 years old, just completed his 10 week basic training programme with the Royal Navy at HMS Raleigh. On Friday 6th of June CPO Macdonald and CI Macdonald travelled all the way to Plymouth to see 'Disco Dave's' Passing Out Parade. This Parade is to show family and friends that those who have joined the Royal Navy are no longer civillians but instead fine Sailors. The Recruits put on a display for their friends and family and had Jmac in tears throughout. David's Passing Out Parade also had special significance as it fell on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings and such the Navy made it a special occasion to celebrate those who fought for our country back then and to celebrate the next generation of Sailors to join the prestigious Navy that is the Royal Navy.

As it was a special occasion there were high ranking officers in attendance as can be seen from the photos below and in true Ardrossan fashion David got his picture with them. Also the Fleet Air Arm gave the parade a fly past in celebration of the event.

Above is is the Inspecting Officer, Vice Admiral Alan Richards CB, Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The unit would like to congratulate David on his success and let him know how proud of him we are, we would also like to wish him the best of luck in his adventures around the world after he qualifies as an Engineering Technician Marine Engineer.

Morrisons Bag Pack

Morrisons Bag Pack

On Saturday 31st May 2014, Ardrossan Sea Cadets were in Morrisons in Stevenston doing a bag pack for Unit funds. The Cadets who dedicated their own time on Saturday worked very hard and we are delighted to announce that their hard work certainly paid off, the unit earned an amazing:

£1075

This money goes a long way in keeping the unit running and allowing our young people to be able to have as many opportunities as possible to make their Sea Cadet experience the best it can be.

Unit Baton Bearers

Unit Baton Bearers

Ardrossan Unit is proud to support two local Queens Baton Bearers. CPO John Macdonald and Able Cadet Robyn Gurney will both carry the Queens Baton when it comes to North Ayrshire on the 15th of July.

The baton will land back in Scotland on the 14th of July after visiting 70 countries, and territories, and traveling more than 190,000 miles. Unlike the Olympic baton where there are many of them made, only one Queen's Baton has been made and has been carried by thousands around the world.

We have spoken to both John and Robyn to see how they were feeling about being nominated to carry the baton, John said "It's a great honour and I feel very privileged that I have been selected to carry the Queen's Baton" Robyn commented also saying "I am very excited but I don't know if I can run 200m"

T.S. Gannet are very proud of both of our team members and will be cheering you on as you carry the baton through your route.
