Kimberley Stubbs from Milton Keynes unit has been awarded a St Johns Ambulance Young First Aider of the Year award in recognition of her quick thinking which saved another young persons life.  She was presented with the award at a ceremony in London on May 13.

Kim, who is also a trampolining coach, used first aid training she gained in the Sea Cadets while coaching at her local gymnastic centre.  A student at the club had climbed back onto a trampoline during a break, did not land correctly and broke her bone in her forearm, severing an artery.  Kim acted fast and applied pressure directly to the wound whilst calling for assistance.  Kim maintained the pressure while calming the casualty until an ambulance arrived.

Kim holds the 2nd Class First Aid qualification gained during a first aid course held at the unit earlier in the year.

Sea cadets started the Jubilee celebrations in style at the Tower of London on May 1 2012.

Helping Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek OBE MVO OPR, to deliver the Jubilee Crystal Diamond which the Queen will use to light the National Beacon on June 4 2012, cadets processed behind the diamond  with the National Sea Cadet Massed Band of 60 cadets from all over the country who had been practising hard for the event.

The band played a composition, written by LC Holly Fraser-Morris from Sutton Coldfield unit, especially written for the occasion, and  buglers played another specially written composition by Portland Sea Cadets when the diamond was presented to the Governor of the Tower of London.

Guests at the event included the First Sea Lord, Second Sea Lord and Captain Sea Cadets as well as friends and relatives who came along to show their support.

Midshipman Lloyd Glanville from Hull Sea Cadets has won one of eight places on a trip of a lifetime to South Africa, thanks to CVQO .

Joining eight other members of UK youth organisations, he will attend an awards ceremony and lunch in June, and one will also be declared the winner of the prestigious Duke of Westminster Award 2012, an annual competition organised by educational charity CVQO.

From 20,000 potential nominees, 21 competitors took part in a challenging selection assessment in April, following a programme of physical and mental tasks designed to reflect which participants are worthy of the top award. In addition, the activities undertaken during the challenge met the criteria for each candidate to achieve a Level 3 Award in Leadership from the Institute of Leadership and Management.
 
Lloyd is a member of Hull Sea Cadets, and has completed both a BTEC Diploma in Public Services and an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Award in Team Leading with CVQO. Both qualifications reflect his cadet activities and skills.

He says, “Completed CVQO qualifications show a serious commitment to personal development and learning new skills. It demands excellent time management and improves multitasking ability.”

Winners this year of the coveted Gibraltar Cup Trophy were Eastbourne, the second year running. And it was a close run between Bristol Adventurer and Bedford, who came 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The competition is a series of challenges and assessments that test the skill, knowledge and fitness of the teams on the same training ground as the Royal Marine Commandos at the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, Devon . Only a fit, dedicated, well trained and cohesive detachment takes the trophy.

Well done to all 48 cadets of the top six UK detachments who took part.
