Fishguard Sea Cadets ready to set sail thanks to Bluestone Foundation Donation

The Fishguard Sea Cadets recently took delivery of their new Yole boat which was purchased thanks to a £2000 donation from the Bluestone Foundation.

This purchase will help to increase participation in sliding seat rowing which is already popular with the Cadets.

Sub Lieutenant Chris Peake said, “Sliding seat rowing is a huge growth area for the Sea Cadets and the great thing about the Yole boats is that they can be one or two man vessels. We had one Yole boat at our base, but that’s hard to share between over 70 cadets.”

“With this second boat we will be able to give more of the young people who come here a chance to give the sport a go. Over the next few years we have ambitious plans to not only grow this sport in Fishguard, but to become a centre of excellence.”

Members of the Bluestone Foundation Steering Group were invited to the Headquarters in Fishguard to see the Yole in person and meet the Cadets who will be putting it through its paces.

Frank Atkins, chairman of the Bluestone Foundation said after the visit, “We’re delighted to have been able to support the Fishguard Sea Cadets with the purchase of a second Yole boat. Respect for the sea is very important when growing up in Pembrokeshire and the Sea Cadets do a great job in promoting this. We wish the group all the best of luck with their development plans.”

The Bluestone Foundation is the charitable arm of Bluestone National Park Resort. Since 2013, the Foundation’s Community fund has gifted over £140,000 to Pembrokeshire groups and projects. There are four rounds of funding available every year, with a maximum grant of £5000 available per project.
