Pembroke, 06 March 2017 – Fundraising efforts by Fishguard Sea Cadets to purchase a new Topper sailing dinghy have been significantly helped by a donation from Valero Pembroke Refinery.
The over 60-strong contingent of Sea Cadets at Fishguard’s TS Skirmisher regularly train on the water with their existing dinghies, helping the cadets to develop self-confidence and communication skills as well as trust and understanding, and lots of fundraising has been done to expand the number of dinghies for the group. With each dinghy costing over £2,500, Fishguard Sea Cadets approached Valero who agreed to give a £500 donation towards their appeal.
Office in Charge Chris Peake, said, “We are very thankful to Valero for this donation to our Topper fund. The sailing programme we run for the cadets is hugely successful, not only in building their skills on the water but also in terms of leadership and team working abilities. With this donation we have taken a big step towards expanding these opportunities we already offer to young people in Fishguard.”
Valero Refinery Public Affairs Manager Stephen Thornton, said, “It is very heartening to see such a large number of young people taking part in the cadet movement, and the continuing strength of Fishguard’s maritime heritage as evidenced by the enthusiasm of the staff, volunteers and cadets at TS Skirmisher. Valero is thrilled to be able to assist this very active charity in its positive work in supporting the development of young people in our community.”
