NEW FREE BTEC QUALIFICATION ANNOUNCED FOR SEA...

The BTEC Level One in Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship is now automatically available to all cadets who reach the rank of Ordinary Cadet.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our cadets to come away with a free and nationally recognised qualification just for simply doing what they already do. 

Chief Petty Officer Derek Brown, said “The launch of our new BTEC qualification in January 2016 will create another opportunity for young people to get the best possible head start in life by joining Sea Cadets, and will make a huge difference to their future academic aspirations and employment prospects.”

 

SEA CADET RYAN CELEBRATES EXAM SUCCESS

Hebburn Sea Cadet Ryan Shaw is celebrating after passing core modules which has set him on the path to promotion as an Able Cadet.

The twelve-year-old from Hebburn joined Hebburn Sea Cadets in May 2014, and has amassed a staggering 65 module passes and nationally recognised qualifications across a wide range of disciplines such as citizenship, first aid and casualty care, adventure training, meteorology and weapons handling.

Hebburn Sea Cadets volunteer, Chief Petty Officer Derek Brown, said “Ryan is a credit to our Unit and epitomises everything the Sea Cadets represent, which is respect, loyalty, self-discipline, commitment, honesty and integrity.  The launch of our new BTEC qualification in January will be offered to every cadet achieving the rank of Ordinary Cadet, and will create another opportunity for young people like Ryan to get the best possible head start in life, and will make a difference to their future academic aspirations and employment prospects.”

Emma Shaw, Ryan’s Mother said; “Since Ryan became a Sea Cadet, I have seen such positive changes in him. He has become a more confident young man and someone who is willing to help out, both at home and in the local community. Ryan’s attitude towards people and life itself has changed for the better. I couldn’t be more proud of him for getting involved in Hebburn Sea Cadets and being the best he can be.

DO MORE WITH YOUR FREE TIME IN...

Hebburn Sea Cadets are urging the general public to make a community focused New Year’s Resolution in 2016, as they seek  volunteers to help run their unit to enable young people from Hebburn to get a head start in life through nautical adventure and fun.

Sea Cadets offers an inspirational environment for young people aged 10 – 18 to challenge themselves and personally develop though nautical adventure based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. This helps young people to build a sense of identity, positively impacting their life chances, from improved post-16 destinations in employment and training to see an increased participation in communities.

George Bone, Chair of Hebburn Sea Cadets, said: “We need the help of local people who are happy to roll up their sleeves, get involved and potentially make a huge positive difference to the lives of lots of young people from our region. We have lots of uniformed and non-uniformed roles ranging from working directly with the cadets to behind the scenes management. You don’t need experience to join us as full training is provided. Everyone has a part to play to ensure young people get the best possible head start in life”.

Hebburn Sea Cadet volunteer George Heron (pictured) said: “I’ve been volunteering for 18 months and now have three nationally recognised qualifications. I have also been offered free training which has equipped me with the skills I need to give our cadets a fantastic experience.

HEBBURN SEA CADETS TEACH SCHOOL PUPILS FIRST AID

Pupils at Hebburn Comprehensive School gained a First Aid qualification at Hebburn Sea Cadets Unit on Friday 4 December 2015. Pupils aged 11 - 13 were invited to a taster session at Hebburn Sea Cadets where they were able to find out more about the charity, and were also taught a range of first aid skills resulting in a British Heart Foundation Heart Start qualification and certificate for all the school pupils.

Hebburn Sea Cadet volunteer, Petty Officer Clare Towns, said “We were invited to Hebburn Comprehensive School to deliver some assemblies to different year groups about the benefits of joining Hebburn Sea Cadets, and how we can help them to get a great head start in life. We offer a range of nationally recognised qualifications underpinned by fun and adventure, and this is yet another great example of how we can benefit young people and make the difference to their future academic aspirations and employment prospects”.

Robert Moore, Assistant Head Teacher at Hebburn Comprehensive School said “First aid saves lives, and we’re delighted that Sea Cadets could teach our pupils this vital qualification and is a fantastic example of the community working together. I would encourage all of our pupils to join a youth group, like Sea Cadets, to gain extra circular activities.”

HEBBURN SEA CADETS HONOURED WITH OUTSTANDING...

It was a night of celebration for Hebburn Sea Cadets when on 14 November 2015, we were presented with the most sought-after annual Sea Cadet award, the Burgee. The award reflects high levels of training, community participation, events, uniform and staff and cadet attendance. The flag was presented to the Officer in Charge by the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear Susan Winfield OBE, as proud parents looked on and attended by the Mayor of South Tyneside.

The burgee is awarded to Sea Cadet units who demonstrate outstanding performance across a variety of disciplines over the course of the last 12 months and it means our unit is one of the best performing units in the UK.

Mrs Winfield said: “I’d like to say congratulations to everybody who played a part and I am delighted to be able to present the cadets with this honour. I am clear this has been a team effort and has involved everyone, from the staff, management committee, commanding officer – everyone plays their part, and also the parents and supporters".
