OFFSHORE SAILING IN SEA CADET FLAGSHIP

OFFSHORE SAILING IN SEA CADET FLAGSHIP

8 - 14 April 2017 - 6 Jersey Sea & Royal Marine Cadets embarked on the Sea Cadet tallship, T.S. Royalist, to undergo a weeks offshore sail training during which they achieved the Offshore Hand One qualification in square rigged ships.  At 34 metres long and capable of taking 24 cadets at a time, the ship, launched in May 2015, to replace its predecessor of the same name, is the flagship of the Sea Cadets offshore fleet.  The Jersey cadets joined at Gosport and over the course of the week travelled around the south coast of England and up into the Thames estuary before berthing at Woolwich in company with other tallships from around the world that had gathered as part of the tallships festival.  The cadets on board had a great week and further developed their skills, personal confidence and teamwork abilities through meeting new people, facing challenging new tasks and just having fun.  Pictured is Cadet 1st Class Charlie Baird learning navigational skills during one of his on duty watches.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition...

An enthusiastic group of Jersey Sea & Royal Marine Cadets embarked on their practice expedition during the half term week spending 2 days walking a pre-planned route with an overnight stop under canvas.  The 5 cadets all completed the event despite some extremes of weather which saw both rain and sunshine along the way.  The Cadets will now go on to complete their qualifying expedition in March and preparation for that is well under way.

HMS IRON DUKE - Portsmouth to Jersey - 8 / 11...

A party of Jersey Sea & Royal Marine Cadets had the opportunity to spend two days at sea on board one of the RN's frigates, HMS Iron Duke as she sailed from Portsmouth to Jersey in support of the Island's Remembrance Day commemoration.  The cadets experienced life on board and were able to see the various departments at work.  In what were far from ideal sea conditions (gales) the cadets stay on board was extended by a day because of adverse weather conditions but all thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.  Pictured are two of the Jersey Sea Cadets, receiving instruction along with a member of the Jersey CCF.

BOATWORK COURSE NO.1 - 13 TO 15 MAY 2016

BOATWORK COURSE NO.1 - 13 TO 15 MAY 2016

15 May 2016 - Jersey Unit held their first boatwork course (BWC) weekend of the year staying at St Aubins Fort.  With some good sailing winds and fine weather, 15 eager cadets spent an enjoyable weekend sailing on the water (and sometimes in it) and with over half of them being novices or relatively inexperienced, it was a pleasure to see 8 of them achieve their RYA Young sailor scheme Stage 1 award.  They were also joined by our Junior section (aged 10 to 12) on the Sunday morning, who were able to have fun rowing the newly acquired Trinity 500 rowing boat on open water for a few hours.  Everyone is already looking forward to the next BWC in June.

NEW ROWING BOATS

1 May 2016   -  Jersey Unit has recently taken possession of two Trinity 500 rowing boats.  The first has been kindly donated by the Rotary Club De La Manche and in recognition of their generosity, the boat has been named "Spirit of Rotary".  The second boat is on loan from the MOD and with both boats now afloat, cadets can experience a faster, lighter rowing boat which they will use both in general training and competitively in the inter divisional rowing regatta later this year.
