So, it sounds like the District 5 aside competition of 2013 was a lot of fun for our cadets. The Senior boys had a good go, and did their best, the Junior boys won 2 and lost 2, and Demi Shaw (being the only senior girl from our unit to attend) did the best she could playing with girls from other units. But the Junior girls absolutely trounced all opposing teams to win the shield and get through to the Area competition! Here’s a match report from PO Brazier:
“In the first game, the girls were on fire! And they won 12 (yes TWELVE) nil. They then won the second game 10 – 1, and the third game 10 – 0. We knew the semi would be a bit tougher, they were up against Stratford, who were the league 1 runners up, but they whopped them 10 – 0. And then they were in the final. It was against Coventry, who were a strong team, but by the end of the first half we were 3 – 1 up. Coventry then decided to change their whole team for the second half, and managed to pull back 2 goals despite our girls battling on and me shouting a LOT more, to end 3 all at full time. Injury time produced no more goals and so we went to penalties. I was invited onto the pitch as manager, to rally the girls, and as I looked at the Cov team most of their players were in tears! I told the girls we could do this, after all, LOOK AT THEM! So Doshi went in goal and the penalties started…..
The Cov captain took the first shot; it went to the left, and MISSED.....Megan Fellows then drilled the ball straight in the back of the net! 4 – 3 to us! Second Cov player scored cleanly, 4 all....Grace (from Evesham) asked me what to do before taking the spot, and I advised her to just put it in the goal, and so she HAMMERED it in! 5 – 4....3rd cov player scores, 5 all....Zara (from Evesham) appeared to have hit the bottom post, rebounding the ball out. We’re all gutted, thinking that this equalises things, when the ref walks up to the goal, and taps the back post, indicating the she scored! Amazing! 6 – 5 up! The 4th cov player then manages to only trickle the ball towards the goal…..Doshi pounces like a cat, she’s all over it, she grabs the ball, runs towards the team with the hugest grin on her face and I yell ‘AND THE WINNERS ARE…..’ and Lt Utting from Redditch shouts ‘LEAMINGTON!!!’ I had to turn away, I was SO proud and they actually made me cry with happiness.” So our girls are now going to be playing at the Area competition on the 27th Jan in Gloucester. Why not join us in supporting them? Details available via PO Brazier.
Several of our cadets worked their socks off packing bags for customers at Tescos Leamington Spa. They managed to raise a phenomenal amount for the unit, and were, as usual, exemplary.
The Junior Sea Cadet division went on a day trip to RAF Cosford where they were able to find out about the RAF and the types of planes used in different periods of history. They had a ride on the flight simulator and had lunch.
On Friday 13th July some lucky Cadets attended the Great British Prom at Warwick Castle along with other Air and Army Cadets and Sea Scouts from the local area. On Saturday evening they met the BRIT Award Nominees the Military Wives Choir whilst supporting the organisers.
