September 2011
Royal Marine Cadets from Leeds Detachment recently took part in a four day field exercise that formed the core of the Eastern Area RMC Summer Camp 2012, held in August at Beckingham Training Camp, Newark.
Blessed with good weather, the cadets joined 150 other cadets from all over Eastern Area in full field conditions, working against an active enemy force in a rolling scenario that tested the individual fieldcraft and weapon handling skills of the cadets, as well as their leadership and teamwork. The cadets were required to mount night patrols, man observation posts, and maintain forward operating bases. The exercise culminated with an attack against an entrenched enemy position.
On completion of the exercise, the cadets also had a shoot on a clay pigeon range and faced the challenge of a climbing wall. A sports day closed another exhausting but enjoyable camp.
The unit has said our final farewell to our affiliated ship, HMS Ark Royal. The aircraft carrier that has held a long association with Leeds has now been decommissioned.
Further to the freedom of the city parade, in which our cadets were fortunate to take part, a final visit was held. 26 cadets and staff visited HMS Ark Royal, staying on board the ship for two days and visiting the sights and sounds of Portsmouth.
Cadets visited the Royal Naval Museum, HMS Victory, Action Stations and the Royal Marines Museum, as well as a bowling trip.
The Officers, Senior Rates and Cadets of TS Ark Royal wish the very best to the Ark and her crew, and thank her for the close friendship we have cherished for the past seventy years.
