It was an exciting evening when the BBC came to visit Newham Sea Cadets.
Making a TV programme about Boys’ Own-type heroes to be presented by Alexander Armstrong later in the year, the crew were keen to film Sea Cadets wearing their exclusive JT Cornwell VC cap tallies and to hear their thoughts about Jack Cornwell and his heroic sacrifice at the First World War Battle of Jutland.
But it wasn’t all about that. They wanted to see other activities too so Staff and Cadets battled to get a dinghy up the narrow stairs and onto the maindeck. It wasn’t a simple evolution but, in true Sea Cadet fashion it was done safely and without damage to personnel or property. The boat made a great centrepiece, surrounded Cadets and of course, the all-important branding.
The Cadets themselves made a special effort to be as smart and seamanlike as they have ever been and made a huge impression on the film crew, who remarked several times about their courtesy, swift responses, obedience to instructions and willingness to do whatever was asked of them.
And when the filming was over, the crew even let some of the Cadets have a go on the kit!
Once again Jack’s Lads and Lasses did themselves proud.
