The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh gave a Reception at St. James's Palace - Wednesday, 29th. May 2013, for The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, at which The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and The Duke of Kent were present.
The Chairman, Mr. A. F. Ian McCullough, was accompanied by his guest; Lieutenant (SCC) David G. Philpot RMR, Officer-in-Charge - T.S. DUKE OF YORK, Portrush Sea Cadets.
For the special occasion, the OiC informed the Chairman, he had his shoes re-shined at Fortnum and Mason, looking very grande. We met not too far away from St. James's Palace, the short stroll, we admired the Guard at the main entrance, around the side towards The Mall, people gathering in 'bunches', strolling along to see a tree spotted the night before, what was thought might be a Jacaranda - not an ancient wisteria! Returning to St. James's Palace - by gosh, some people had formed an orderly line, we went to the end , met two ladies from a charity . . . . . . Make-a-Wish Foundation, progressing forward to the entrance door, the OiC spotted Mr. Martin Coles (CEO MSSC) accompanied by Lieutenant (SCC) Sue Gitins, RNR., Commanding Officer, Fishguard Sea Cadets . . . . . . The CEO tried to jump the queue . . . . . . he did BUT, the Chairman and OiC put him in his place, behind the pair of us!
Identity checked, coats and umbrellas away, eyes wide open looking at and taking all in - the magnificence of St. James's Palace, in parts, dating back to the early 1500's. With other guests entering a grand reception room, fairly quickly, meeting Mr. Walter Rader - NI Committee Representative Member of the QAVS, Mrs. Sandra Adair of Volunteer Now - each attended the QAVS Presentation at Portrush Town Hall - drinks, gorgeous canapés . . . . . . drinks and more gorgeous canapés!
A door was opened at the end of the room, guests requested to have their respective named invitations at the ready . . . . . . through the door, your name called out, there before you - Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and, HRH Duke of Edinburgh. A handshake to each and pleasantries over, guided by the Household staff in to another large room, not long before finding many people to talk to . . . . . HRH Duke of Edinburgh stepped within the gathering, so easy to talk to, the conversation was diverse, HRH drifted off after ten minutes - to talk to many others.
We were all delighted, smiles galore, we then realised Her Majesty was to the other side of the room, meeting ladies and two people in wheel-chairs, the Chairman was placed to the end of the line of guests, Her Majesty walked over - welcomed the Chairman, many topics covered, naturally - top of the list; T.S. DUKE OF YORK, Portrush Sea Cadets.
The Duke of Kent arrived to have a chat, so easy, so casual, so interesting, mentioning Prince Michael had been in Northern Ireland a couple of weeks ago, attending the Battle of Atlantic Commemorations at Londonderry. The Duke left, next on the visiting list, Martyn Lewis CBE - the QAVS Chairman - ex BBC and ITN newsreader, educated at Dalriada School, Ballymoney - like all good times, when you really have your feet under the table, it is time to say goodbye and that we did.
The Chairman and OiC walked to Piccadilly - had a cup of tea and a chat about their day, a wonderful day.
London is looking BRILLIANT, as ever . . . . . . well prepared for the GREAT OCCASION - this time, the Diamond Jubilee of the Coronation.
