The last Sunday in September and the harvest festival brings the Costomonger Pearly Kings and Queens, with their fruits of the season to their church St Mary Le Bow in the city of London; acompanied by several dozen mayors, enlivened by some hearty traditional entertainment and a wonderful day was had by all. Once again these events were supported by Southwark Sea Cadets who gained a glimpse into that curious world of those pearly Londoners in their very own designs, whistles and flutes with daisy roots all a glitter with pearly buttons galore, charitable folk celebrating their big day of the year. Bands, Morris Dancing, Maypole, Donkeys and much more was followed by a March Past and parade to the church.

Excellent weather for the final weekend of September and London Southern District AT competition centred around a MOD Army Training Area attached to Longmoor Camp in Hampshire.

There were 9 teams taking part and the Southwark team with LC S Cummins as leader performed very well finishing a close 3rd overall.

The weekend included map & compass work, campcraft, first aid, seamanship and leadership tasks and presented a wide mix of activities for all involved.

PowerBee has kindly donated a Signaller Fusion Solar Security Light to the Southwark Sea Cadets.

The Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth organisation for young people between the age of 10 and 18 which aims to help young people towards responsible adulthood by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy.

Each individual Sea Cadet Unit is an independent charity, which must be fully self-sufficient in terms of funding, a wide range of activities both waterborne and shore based. Run by volunteers in their spare time it can be a constant challenge to provide Unit HQ, minibus, boats and other state-of-the-art equipment that young people in the 21^st century tend to take for granted.

With this mind, PowerBee was pleased to arrange donation of a Signaller Fusion Solar Security Light to help with external security at the Unit HQ. Unit Management Team Chair Mrs Sues Stevens commented ‘Keeping the Unit HQ well maintained, secure and neat and tidy is all part of my role and I was delighted to receive the Support of PowerBee and very impressed with the quality of the security light which is perfect for our requirements’.

Southwark cadets supported by Royal Navy personnel from HMS Collingwood's Close Range Gunnery School were at Millwall FC to support a Memorial collection for 1st World War hero Albert McKenzie VC.

Albert Edward McKenzie was born on 23rd October 1898 and lived with his family in Shorncliffe Road, Southwark. A Bermondsey boy and supporter of Millwall.

He joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman during the First World War (1914-18).

On 23rd April 1918 (St George’s Day) sailors from the Royal Navy (including Albert), led a raid to recapture the port of Zeebrugge.

Despite being severely wounded, McKenzie’s bravery, courage and fortitude, along with other comrades, ensured the success of the mission.

Well done to the five cadets who completed RYA Powerboat Level 1 at Royal Victoria Dock on Sunday.

Using a variety of craft - Cheverton Champ, Newmatic Rigiflex 360 and RIB - they successfully completed training and assessment to gain the award.

Next it is RYA Power Level 2.
