Whitley Bay Sea Cadet Emily Burston, aged 17, has been awarded the prestigious role of Lord-Lieutenant of Northumberland’s Cadet. The official ceremony took place on Tuesday 10 February 2015 which the Lord-Lieutenant of Northumberland, Her Grace Duchess of Northumberland attended.
Emily’s new role as Lord-Lieutenant Cadet of Northumberland involves assisting the Lord-Lieutenant of Northumberland in events, such as on parade for Royal visits, military and civic events and church services, as well as act as an ambassador for Sea Cadets and young people living in Northumberland. The role will last a year from January 2015.
Emily, a Petty Officer Cadet at Whitley Bay Sea Cadets, is delighted with her new role, especially as she’s the first cadet at the unit to be awarded this role in the unit’s 72 year history.
She says: “I’m really thrilled to be a Lord-Lieutenant Cadet for Northumberland! Its an honour for both myself and the Unit. I’m really proud to act on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant; it’s such a prestigious role.
Sea Cadets has opened many doors for me. I joined in 2010 and haven’t looked back since. I have gained qualifications in sailing, powerboating, kayaking and canoeing, and enjoyed many trips away competing in local and national events. I have recently completed National Citizen Service, and can now look forward to my new role as Lord-Lieutenant Cadet for Northumberland”.
Whitley Bay Sea Cadets Unit is celebrating another success. Commanding Officer Jane Fox has been awarded the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service in recognition of her outstanding loyalty and commitment to Sea Cadets for 30 years of volunteering with the charity. Jane was also presented with her certificate at the official ceremony on Tuesday 10 February.
