Congratulations to all the winners and finalists at this year's National Five-a-Side Football Competition!

The event took place between 24 and 26 February at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham, Lincolnshire.

The opportunities on offer with Sea Cadets have been showcased in a BBC charity appeal. 

BBC Radio Ulster broadcast the appeal yesterday (Sunday 26 February) and today. In it, Cadet Paddy tells how Sea Cadets has helped him to develop as a person, while Northern Ireland Development Worker Neal Somerville explains a little more.

Six Sea Cadets have made the 30-person shortlist for the Duke of Westminster Award, a scheme which gives CVQO learners the opportunity to win a trip to South Africa. 

The CVQO Duke of Westminster Award is designed to find the best of the CVQO cadets across the UK. When looking through applications the Duke of Westminster Award panel look for 'selfless, determined individuals who always keep their heads up and remain positive through adversity; those who have overcome a personal challenge or gone the distance to help someone.'

It's an outstanding achievement to make the shortlist, well done to:

Cadet Hannah - Birmingham Sherbourne Sea Cadets

Cadet Olivia - T S Steadfast, Kingston and District Sea Cadets

Cadet Jake - Guildford Sea Cadets RMCD

These six cadets will go through to a selection event in Somerset, to determine which cadets will win the trip to South Africa. 

An electrical engineering apprentice at First TransPennine Express was inspired to pursue the career by Sea Cadets.

Nineteen-year-old Caitlin Gent got hooked on engineering during her time in the Corps.

She is featured on today's Daily Mirror Jobs page, where, talking about her time at Sea Cadets, she says: "I realised that doing hands-on things was what I loved. That helped me realise university wasn't for me."

Caitlin is one of three women on the entire fleet, but adds: "The heavy maintenance area can be very dirty and greasy and there's a lot of banter, but I just get on with it."

A massive thank you to our 9,000 volunteers who give up their free time to run their local unit, help on an offshore voyage, go on an international exchange or manage a whole range of activities across the corps from band to physical training to drill - to name a few examples! Many volunteer over 20 hours a week at their unit and give up weeks of annual leave to help out on camps and competitions, whilst having full time jobs and families.

Our volunteers are passionate and dedicated to delivering the Sea Cadet experience for young people to have the best possible head start in life.
