Shooting at Okehampton - 9th to 11th January 2009

Shooting at Okehampton - 9th to 11th January 2009

This weekend, eight cadets from our unit went on a shooting weekend at Okehampton Army Camp. The Saturday involved a morning on Dartmoor shooting the L98A1 (SA80 variant) in temperatures of -5 celsius, and the afternoon offered a chance to warm up on the shooting simulator indoors. On Sunday, everyone was back on Dartmoor for more shooting with the real thing, before returning home in the afternoon. Thankfully, all the cadets heeded the staff warnings about bringing warm clothing!

Christmas "Dining In" Night - 2008

On the 18th December 2008, our cadets attended our annual "Dining In" night at the Unit. As always, our resident chefs (PO Chris Clayton and his wife, Alison) performed their magic and catered for 40+ people. During the evening the Junior Cadets performed their "Sods Opera", and the evening finished off with a disco from our resident DJ (PO Chris Jorey).

Coxswain / IM Weekend - 14th to 16th November 2008

Coxswain / IM Weekend - 14th to 16th November 2008

Over the weekend, we held a coxswain and supervised coxswain course for pulling and a adult Instructional methods (IM) course at the unit. We had 4 of our cadets on the pulling course along with 4 cadets from the St Austell unit and 2 from the Penzance unit. Afloat we had two ASCs, one from our unit and the other kindly lent to us for the weekend by Cornwall District Sea Cadets. By the end of the weekend there were 5 new coxswains and 2 new supervised coxswains - well done to those cadets.
We also had one of our unit staff (Mrs. Mitchell) on the IM course along we three more adults from around district and they were all successful in gaining an approved grade in Instructional Methods. Congratulations to them.

Remembrance Parade - 9th November 2008

On Sunday 9th November, 32 of our cadets took part in the Remembrance Parades. One represented us at the Falmouth Parade, with the remaining 31 attending the Penryn Parade. We have received praises for the turn-out and behaviour of our cadets, which as a unit makes us proud. Thank you to all the cadets who attended!

BSAC Ocean Diving - 8th November 2008

Three cadets who passed their BSAC Ocean Diving qualification earlier in the year took to the water again for their 20 metre qualifying dive. Under the watchful eyes of both a BSAC Senior Instructor (John Adams) and our own PPO(SCC) Chris Clayton (BSAC Instructor), the cadets were accompanied down on a dive to the SS Stanwood wreck in the Carrick Roads. Our unit RIB took the team from the unit out into Carrick Roads, and acted as the dive boat for the duration. Although the visibility was not that great, all three cadets had a good look around the wreck, and achieved their 20 metre goal.
