Summer Shooting Camp - 17th to 22nd August 2008

Summer Shooting Camp - 17th to 22nd August 2008

Six cadets from our unit (AC Fox, AC Mitchell, AC Littlewood V, AC Davidson, AC Paull and OC Linthwaite) attended the Southwest Area Summer Shooting Camp at Sennybridge, Wales. They arrived on the Sunday and began with weapons handling, and then spent the next four days firing the L98A1 cadet rifle (based on the SA80). Littlewood V gained her Advanced Shooting Badge, and the others gained their Basic Shooting Badge. Four of them will now go onto the Area competition (29th-31st August) in Liverpool. The other two are busy that weekend with the District ET Competition - sometimes there are not enough days in the week!

Falmouth & Penryn Sea Cadets Get Their Own...

Four cadets completed their B.S.A.C. Ocean Diver training over the weekend of 15th-16th August 2008. A.C Richardson, A.C. Rawlins, A.C Mitchell, O.C. Tullin are now qualified as Ocean Divers, the first grade on the B.S.A.C. ladder.
The cadets carried out their training dives at Porthkerris, courtesy of the M.O.D. facilities there. Despite challenging weather conditions on the second day, they all completed the requisite number of hours underwater, during which they carried out various training tasks including mask clearing, buddy air sharing, controlled buoyant lifts & surface tows. All took place under the watchful eye of John Adams, the regional BSAC coaching team member. As well as John the other instructors on the day were Pete Batchelour, an ex Royal Navy diver who ensured that activities complied with MOD Joint Services rules and PPO(SCC) Chris Clayton, a member of staff from the Falmouth & Penryn unit who set the whole thing up.
Plans for the future are to get the cadets in for more dives to build up their experience, then to take them up to the next level as Sports Divers. Once at that level they can go forward onto a R.N. diver aquaint course and earn their diver badge.
Other cadets are now asking if they can train as divers so we will be able to keep this particular ball rolling.

Area Sailing Regatta - 2nd August 2008

Five cadets from our Unit attended the Sea Cadet Southwest Area Sailing Regatta, held in Plymouth. A/C Richardson, A/C Rawlins and A/C Davidson sailed Laser Picos, with O/C Pearce and CDT Macwilliam sailing Toppers. Our team was managed by PPO Chris Jorey, and Unit Assistant Ms Kara Viner kindly drove the minibus for the day. As of yet we have had no results but as it was the first year of racing for our cadets, all did really well.

A Sea Sunday service took place in the Church, followed by a parade from the Church to the Maritime Museum, with the salute being taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall outside of Trago Mills. Sixteen of our cadets attended the parade (including three Junior Cadets), along with five of our members of staff.
