Jack Petchey Voyage Success

12 Cadets and 2 members of staff recently Joined the Sea Cadet Offshore Power Vessel T/S Jack Petchey for a week voyage from Milford Haven to Penarth departing on Saturday 24th August and returning on Friday 31st August. The Cadets all gathered at Milford Haven Marine on Saturday 24th ready for Crew Briefing, Crew Training and Preparing to Depart. Unfortunately the weather was poor on the Sunday and on the Monday, but they did anchor in Dale for Lunch on the Monday, before setting off for Lundy Island. The cadets managed to get ashore on Lundy and explore the Island and visit the gift shop. On the Tuesday whilst undertaking lots of Bridge Training, steering, navigation and heaving line practise they eventually arrived in Swansea Marine having been through the lock to gain access to the Marina. After further training and exercises, the cadets then had some time ashore. Wednesday they set sail in the morning for Cardiff Bay during this part of the voyage the cadets took bearing and learned all about the Lifesaving Equipment on board as well as helming the boat. On arrival in the heart of Cardiff Bay the cadets enjoyed their evening meal, before once again going ashore. Thursday morning they set sail for Penarth, during this part of the voyage they had the opportunity to do some "man over board Drills" with the ships dummy "Ruth" Further seamanship training was carried out including knots and coming alongside training, before eventually arriving in Penarth Marina that evening. During the week the cadets would have worked watches, including throughout the night and worked in teams. The cadets would have learned all aspects of life at Sea, whilst also undertaking ceremonial colours and evening colours, cleaning ship, cooking, navigation, engineering, and working towards their qualifications. During the week the cadets gained 6 Offshore Hand 1 Qualifications, 6 Offshore Hand 2 Qualifications and 6 also gained their RYA Start Motor Cruising Certificate. These Voyages cost £320 each, but all cadets have been extremely fortunate to receive funding for these voyages in the form of bursaries. The Cadets and Fishguard Sea Cadets would like to thank the following for their support of this voyage, Ulysses Trust, Fishguard & Goodwick Rotary Club, Soroptimists and Port of Milford Haven. We would also like to thank PO Charlie Mustoe and Lt (SCC) Lee Smith RNR who accompanied them on this voyage for a week.
