Two combined teams from Luton Sea Cadets and Luton Royal Marines Cadets took part in the second of their practice Duke Of Edinburgh's Award expeditions as part of their bronze or silver awards this weekend. The 48 hours expedition last took the teams through Whipsnade and Dagnall as they navigated the downs in preparation for their unsupervised expeditions later in the year. The two teams lead by Able Cadet Frost and Corporal Loveland repspectively had to be completely self sufficient and carry everything that they would need for the two day walk. After a very shakey star on Sunday morning, both teams completed the course by 1500 on Sunday. A huge well done to all involved, especially to those who have improved beyond all recognition from the first practice. The event was organised and assessed by A/PO Dennehy, herself an ML and DofE Gold Assessor.

Following the success of the Royal Marines Cadets Sponsored Speed March earlier in the year, thrity cadets from all three sections of the unit took part in a Sponsored Speed March to raise money for the unit. The event took place at Luton's unit on Lower Harpenden Road, using the Cycle Path opposite. Cadets completed a 5km course broken into 500m legs. Three teams were entered, the Sea Cadets led my Able Cadet Frost and Lt (SCC) Lancaster RMR, the Royal Marines Cadets lead by L/Cpl Salmon and PCI Butler and the Junior Sea Cadets led by JCFC Loveland and PCI Aldridge. The event takes inspiration from the 9mile Speed March that Royal Marines have to complete for their Commando Tests, but aimed the level cadets could complete. Working as a team, running together and spurring each other on, all three teams completed the course in under seventy minutes including time for water breaks.

At this time there are no figures of how much has been raised by the event, but the Commanding Officer is delighted with the response. Once a total is reached, the amont will be posted here.

15th-17th June 2012
This weekend the X-Ray Coy Advancement Board was held at Beckingham ATE. Following on from the Pre-Board in April, Luton submitted three candidates for assessment.MC2 Matthews pictured below (third left) completed his MC1 board, where he was tested in basic fieldcraft, map-reading, weapons training and drill. L/Cpl Ayers and L/Cpl Loveland, pictured left (centre and second from right), completed their Corporal's board, where they were tested in advanced fieldcraft, advanced map-reading, weapons training and drill. This is the first time that Luton has submitted any candidates for a Corporals board, and as another sign of the growing strength of the detachment. The scored were announced on Sunday afternoon, and awards were presented by the Area Office, Commander Eric Langley RN.

Of the forty-one MC1 candidates, MC2 Matthews came third highest on the board. This is a fantastic achievement and he is duely promoted to Lance Corporal. L/Cpls Ayers and Loveland were amongst the five successful Corporals candidates, and had their chevrons presented to them by the Area Officer. They are now the first Corporals in the detachment and are setting the trend for all those that follow. Congratulations and BZ to all candidates.

18th-20th May 2012
This weekend saw the Bedfordshire District Regatta held at Bedford Unit. Luton Unit entered teams into the Junior Boys and Senior Boys Rowing races, as well as kayakers into various races including sprints, marathons, singles and doubles. The senior Boys team were the runners up in their caetegory in the rowing races. The team consisting of MC2 Smith, AC Evans, L/Cpl Loveland, L/Cpl Salmon and L/Cpl Spraggon-Quinn won all but one of their races, narrowly missing out to Bedford. L/Cpl Sproggon Quiin is pictured (left) receivign the certificated from the District Officer, Lt Cdr (SCC) Knight RNR.

In the kayaking, AC Frost won both the Senior Boy's Single Sprint and the Single Marathon. MC2 Willis and MC Lewis won the junior boys double marathon. A huge well done to all 14 of teh cadets who attended, you did the unit proud. It was a hugely enjoyable day with even teh staff ahving a go, with two rowing crews coxswained by the District Officer and Deputy District Officer respectievly, though they were both beaten by Luton's safety kayakers with PCI Stevens winning the race in his kayak.

A huge well done to all the cadets and staff who turned up on this Sunday for Bag Packing at Sainsburys in Harpenden. The total raised was in excess of £900. Bravo Zulu.

The Sea Cadets are an independent charity and as such each unit is responsible for raising money for everything from paying for lights and heating at the unit, through to training materials and kit, through to bursaries to send disadvantages cadets away on offshore voyages. This was one of several events held throughout the year to raise money for boating equipment, field equipment for marines and for the ongoing upkeep of our rapidly aging unit premeses. A huge thank you to all cadets and staff who gave up their time to fund raise.
