Five cadets have spent the week aboard HMS Bristol in Portsmouth as part of Eastern Area Summer Camp. The annual camp brings together all 61 units from Eastern Area, and offers cadets to complete a variety of courses, earning themselves one or two new qualifications in the process. Cadets can complete a full week’s boating or a 2nd Class Qualification, or alternatively complete two half-week qualifications. Luton unit were represented at HMS Bristol by AC Frost, MC2 Perry, LC Newell, and staffed by A/PO (SCC) Dennehy and PCI Stevens. AC Frost earned his second class Seamanship, setting him up well for his Leading Cadets Board, whilst MC2 Perry completed both 3rd class Seamanship and 3rd Class Marine Engineering. Well done to all involved.

Sea Cadets from all over the country preceded Her Majesty down the Thames as part of the Diamon Jubilee Pageant. Fifty Trinity 500s carrying the flags of the nations of the commonwealth led the Royal Barge through the celebrations of the Queen’s sixtieth year on the throne.

At Luton, the following members of staff received their Diamond Jubilee Medal as part of the celebrations: CPO (SCC) M. Brogan, PO (SCC) A. Rigg, PO (SCC) M. Hall, Lt (SCC) L. Haines RNR, Lt (SCC) P. Jupe RNR.

Following their success at the District Regatta, cadets from Luton formed part of the Bedfordshire District team for the Eastern Area Regatta at Girton.

Kayakers from Luton formed part of a combined team with cadets from Bedford, Dunstable, Flitwick & Ampthill and Biggleswade to take on the other nine Districts in Eastern Area.

From Luton, Able Cadet Frost entered the Senior Boys Sprint and Marathon kayaking, whilst MC Lewis and MC2 Willis competed in the junior Boys Doubles. Well done to all cadets who took part.

Sea Cadets from Luton will have the chance to see some of the Olympic sailing from one of the best vantage points when they visit sit HMS Bulwark during August.

The Royal Navy are providing security at the Olympic and Paralympic sailing site in Weymouth during the games. And, as the Sea Cadet’s biggest supporter they have offered 650 Sea Cadets from all over the UK a chance to come on board.

Luton unit are part of the lucky group of cadets visiting the site throughout the games. Cadets will experience life on a naval vessel, and get the chance to watch the Olympic sailing from an impressive vantage point.

Commanding Officer CPO (SCC) M. Brogan said: “We are thrilled to have this opportunity, it’s amazing to not only be in Weymouth at this time but to see a working RN ship as well is an experience many of our cadets will cherish”.

Leading Cadet Zoe Newell has completed a week offshore aboard the Sea Cadet Corps’s flagship, T.S Royalist. The square rigger is the largest of the Sea Cadet fleet and LC Newell’s voyage took her from Gosport to Falmouth. The five day journey took her and the crew right out into the channel, practicing advanced sailing, navigation and seamanship.

The Royalist along with the powered fleet, T.S. John Jerwood and T.S. Jack Petchley offer cadets offshore opportunities during the summer and any cadet interested should speak to their Divisional Officer in the first instance.
