This weekend, APO Dennehy attended the Basic Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell. The course is the last of the core modules that each new uniformed instructor is required to complete before attaining their substantive rank. Having complete her Adult Induction, Drill, First Aid, Instructional Methods, Seamanship, Youth Development and now Basic Leadership as well, her path is clear to becoming a full Petty Officer and gaining her ‘crowns’. She is the first to from Luton unit to complete the entire scheme under the new system. Bravo Zulu.

Luton Unit’s new galley, re-vamped classrooms, polished wardroom and even the Commanding Officer’s newly tidied desk were put through their paces this past fortnight as Luton Unit hosted both of the Bedfordshire District Multi-Activity Cadet Training (MACT) weekends. The courses operate life a buffet of courses, with a variety of activities going on in parallel. Activities across the two weekends included the District Advancement Board, Instructional Methods of senior cadets, the new CIS syllabus, Meteorology, First Aid and basic fieldcraft for the Royal Marines Cadets. These weekends have cemented Luton’s reputations as hosts and have proved that we can cater for training opportunities from District and Area level. Luton's New Galley Is Open For Business!

Luton's New Galley Is Open For Business!

23/03/2014

It has been a long hard road with many ups, down, issues and technical difficulties, but we are delighted to announce that the new Luton Sea Cadet Galley is now open for business. The old interior has been completely stripped out and replaced by a much larger kitchen area and serving top, new ovens, hobs and utensils and equipment. Not only is the new galley a far nicer place for cadets during stand easy, but it also increased the capability of Luton Sea Cadets to cater for outside groups, and also for cadets to complete their Catering/Stewarding qualifications.

A huge thank you to all involved, including the Chairman and committee, the CO and staff, Phil the builder and the cadets who have helped along the way.

Luton Sea Cadets are looking to establish a Parents & Supporters Association. This is a support network of parents and friends that are willing to help out occasionally, whether it is helping to cater on weekends, serving the sweets in the NAAFI or taking up a paintbrush for projects such as the Galley. If you are interested, please contact the Unit Chairman at LutonSeaCadets@gmail.com.

This Wednesday saw the biennial Royal Navy Parade (RNP). Following on from the Unit Review Visit, the RNP forms the key part of the unit’s annual inspection. The Inspecting Office this year was the Deputy Area Officer, Commander Stewart Watt RN.

The cadets, led by Parade Commander AC Young, completed a Ceremonial Divisions and were inspected by Commander Watt and the Cllr Sheila Roden, Mayor of Luton. After tea and biscuits, the VIPs, including the District Staff, Troop Commander, Inspecting Officer and Cllr Richard Stay were treated to a tour of the unit before the ‘Evolutions’ began

The displays (‘evolutions’) comprised a guide to types of knots from the Juniors (ages 10-11), followed by a homage to the Battle Of Jutland from Sea Cadets (ages 12-17) and finished off with the 4 Victoria Crosses award at Jutland by the Royal Marines Cadets (ages 13-17). The World War One theme was chosen as 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of the start of the war.

Behind the scenes the inspecting team assessed the units and the cadets’ achievements over the last year, including boating hours completed, qualifications gained, camps attended and uniform inspection scores. The exact scores will be delivered in a few weeks.

A huge well done to all involved, and a huge thank you to all cadets, staff, committee and supporters who made that event possible.
