The Unit Chairman cordially invites all parents, guardians, friends and supporters to the 2013/2014 Annual General Meeting of the Luton Sea Cadets Unit Management Team (UMT).

This annual meeting is held to bridge the gap between the parents and the committee, and also elect supporters to the positions within the committee such as vice chairman, secretary and treasurer. All supporters are invited to come along to ask questions and discuss the issues affecting the unit at this time, and for those who want to give something back to the unit and support our cause, you can find out how to get involved - it's not as time consuming or complicated as you may think. Topics include the current status of the unit, future plans, and current issues affecting the unit. Additionally there will be information on how you can support the unit, which does not always involve a huge time committment. Any carpenters, electricians or plumbers who wouldn't mind fixing the occasional leaky tap or plug socket, could greatly help the unit and anyone willing to give up an evening to grab a paint brush can also make a huge difference to the cadets.

The meeting will be held at Luton Sea Cadet unit on October 23rd 2013 from 1930 to 2130. All attendees should arrive by 1910 latest so the meeting can start at 1930 sharp. Cadets will be occupied in the normal Wednesday night parade night. Refreshments will be available.

This year the delegation from Eastern Area that forms part of the National Trafalgar Parade fell to Bedfordshire District and 5 Troop. 24 cadets from the district and 24 Royal Marines Cadets from 5 Troop were selected to take part in the parade, the flagship event of the year for the Sea Cadet Corps. It was an honour as such opportunities come around once every 36 years.

The event involved two days training at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth before being bussed to Horseguards Parade. The parade marched from Horseguards Parade into Trafalgar Square to take part in the service of remembrance for Admiral Lord Nelson’s famous victory on 1805. On completion of the service, the parade re-formed for the cadets to march out of Trafalgar Parade, through the middle of Admiralty Arch, along the Mall, past Buckingham Palace and into Wellington Barracks.

The guest of Honour Rear Admiral J Willcox RN described the parade as ‘hoofing’, and said that the standard of cadets on parade was as good as any Royal Navy or Royal Marines parade he had seen. A huge thank you to all cadets and staff who took part.

The Sea Cadets were represented by LC Williams, POC Frost, POC Newell, OC Esser, AC Ayles, and led by Lt Cdr (SCC) Glanville RNR who stepped in last minute. The Royal Marines Cadets comprised L/CPL Perry, MC1 Lewis and MC2 Dudley, and were led by Lt (SCC) Lancaster RMR.

The SRMO Field Inspection has been replaced by the Company Annual Training, Safety & Efficiency Appraisal (CATSEA). Each detachment put in a team of 8 cadets and one adult to complete a field exercise and 6 stances under the assessment of the HQ Company from London. With Lt (SCC) Lancaster RMR pulled away for Troop duties, it fell to A/Sgt (SCC) Morgan to lead the team consisting of Cadet Sgt Spraggon-Quinn, Cpl Salmon, Cpl Matthews, Cpl Ayers, Cpl Loveland, L/Cpl Perry, MC1 Dudley and MC1 Willis to represent the unit.

The assessment involved completing 6 stances, an Orders Extraction exercise and a Standing Patrol, and the Luton team were assessed by the new SRMO, C/Sgt Woods RM. The Luton team scored 82, the third highest score in the Company. Well done to all involved. They certainly earned the McDonalds on the way back.

For the second year in a row, Luton Sea Cadets were asked to take part in the UK Corvette Club’s annual meet at Putteridge Bury. The vent held over two days see some 200 corvettes compete for the prizes. Following the success of the event last year, Luton Sea Cadets provided parking marshals to the event. The cadets were responsible for marshalling the cars into position and during their down time were at liberty to browse the competitors lines.

Thank you to all cadets who turned out. You did the unit proud and earned a nice donation to the unit.

Bedfordshire District were invited to join Northants & Leicester District for their Multi-Activity-Cadet-Training weekend at Yardley Chase training area. Cadets from all Bedfordshire units attended to take part in a variety of courses. This included new AT activies such as Mountain Biking as tested by Cdt Bence and L/CPl Perry, Campcraft as taught by A/PO(SCC) Dennehy and Sailing over at Thrapston as done by OC Esser.

5 Troop Royal Marines Cadets also made use of the Training Area to do a field exercise, led by 5 Troop Cdr Capt (SCC) Smith RMR. Cpl Salmon, Sgt Spraggon-Quinn, MC2 Dudley and Cpl Matthews took part in the field training.
