On the 8th of March this year, Nottingham had their biennial Royal Naval Parade. For 2012, Nottingham have achieved their 27th consecutive burgee, an efficiency award which is only awarded to the highest calibre of units. This year’s RNP was attended by the Captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Mark Windsor RN.
The evening began with a full ceremonial display including an armed guard of 6 cadets and an inspection of all the divisions by both the Captain and the Area Officer, Cdr Eric Langley RN. The VIPs were given a tour of the unit, showcasing some of the areas which have recently been refurbished thanks to the generosity of the local TA, whilst the parents were treated to stand easy where they could peruse the various static displays.
All of the VIPs and visitors were then invited to watch this year’s evolution, entitled ‘Coach Trip’, which took the form of a film highlighting Nottingham’s achievements from 2011. The normally drab boatshed was transformed into a high tech cinema, complete with pretend popcorn and 3D glasses for each audience member. Scenes included the National Trafalgar Day parade, an international exchange to Canada, and Nottingham’s spectacular Gold medal win at the National Combined Regatta in September.
The night was concluded by presentations and the Area Officer’s address, where he commended the unit on their efforts. The presentations included the advancement of Bayleigh Sills to Leading Cadet, and Jack Palmer to Petty Officer Cadet. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the burgee was certainly well deserved.
