Dieppe Raid Commeration

Dieppe Raid Commeration

Moday 19th August 2013

A small platoon of Cadets from the Unitattended the annual service held at St. Mary's Cemetry Southampton to commemorate those who gave their lives during the Raid on the German occupied French port of Dieppe.

For the first time this year the Last Post was sounded on a Bugle by Leading Cadet J. Leadbitter from the Unit Band. For those who are unfamiliar with the history here is a short explanation:

The Dieppe Raid, also known as the Battle of Dieppe, Operation Rutter and, later, Operation Jubilee, was a Second World War Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The raid took place on the northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by limited Royal Navy and large Royal Air Force contingents.

Southampton Cancer Relief Race for Life 2013

Sunday 14th July 2013

Southampton Common, Southampton

The Southampton Sea Cadet support team mobilised once again in support of the Cancer Relief Race for Life.

As in previous years the cadets and staff assisted with the start of the main 5K event and then swiftly moved to the finish line once all the participants had started. There they were deployed in teams to ensure that all the runners as they finished received that all important bottle(s) of water on this very hot day.

Volunteering for events such as these counts towards the volunteering sections of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, which the Unit operates and offers to all cadets aged 14 years old and over.

Like to find out more about becoming a Sea Cadet and participating the D of E Award Scheme then contact the Unit for details.

Junior Sea Cadets - Green Module Training Day

Junior Sea Cadets - Green Module Training Day

Saturday 13th July 2013

Moors Valley Country Park - Verwood Dorset

As part of their training the Junior Sea Cadets have a Green Module which is Outdoor Activities, and as part of their training, so that they can achieve this module, they spent a day in Moors Valley Country Park.

The day was spent doing some basic map skills, Orienteering and Cooking on Camp Stoves in the sunshine. Although there was a serious training element to the day the Cadets did find time to have some fun navigating their way round the Play Trail and testing all the elements of the trail.

There was even time for an Ice Cream, to end the day off.

If you are aged between 10 and 12 years old and would like to join in different activities then contact the Unit to find out more.

Basic Campcraft Course

Basic Campcraft Course

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th July 2013

New Forest

Ten cadets and two staff members went out in to the New Forest in the Midday Sun (like the Mad Dogs & Englishman), with Map, Compass and Rusk Sacks.

The cadets were instructed in the basics of navigating on land using a map and compass while being aware of their surrounding and caring for the countryside. They then returned to the over night campsite where they were taught how to pitch and maintain tents along with catering for themselves cooking on a stove.

The day was finished off with an impromptu game of rounders (or at least we think thats what they were playing!).

Sunday, due to the temperature was spent under the shade of the trees in Moors Valley Country Park on their Orienteering Course with a little time to relax on the play trail.

All cadets that attended sucessfully completed and were awarded the Basic Campcraft Award.
