Well we had hoped for a more normal year , but as we all know we started the year in lockdown and were back to virtual, this time we concetrated on progression for our cadets to the next rank and we had a good virtual turnout

During this time the CO and training officer delivered care packages and I survived lock down 2020 t shirt - this was very greatly recieved by our cadets and meant we could touch base with them as well 

We finally came back in May 2021 - just in time for the boating season - we got cadets out in Rowing / Sailing / Power boats and a variety of Kayaks

Cadets gained so many qualifictions on the water - as they were so glad to be back boating

Duke of Edinburgh expeditions came back and on one of the hottest days of the year completed their bronze expedition which resulted in final award of the Bronze award

Cadets gained qualificatons in First Aid / Piping / Meterology Hillwalking / Marine Engineering / Seamanship/ Drill  to name just a few

Cadets gained promotions and three became senior cadets with one reaching PO Cdt - our highest ranked cadet and not all get there 

We had a visit from our Area Officer and we put on a show case to be proud off, boating . guard first aid

Our Juniors ( 10 to 11) have completed modules , gained promototions and commodores pennants - all whilst having the most fun you can imagine from STEM to Sports to creating 

We got back out into the community on parade and at the boatshow

We have had a different but amazing year, our cadets have been brilliant and we are becoming busier than ever now we have 60 cadets 

We have our christmas party this week and then two weeks  off

2020 as we all know was a year when all our lifes changed, but at Southampton Sea cadets our aim was to offer as much as we could to our young people

We started the year as normal with a very successfull drill and piping competition - winning all five events that we entered - Then lockdown happened and the world became virtual

We moved our training programme online as best as we could and became aquianted with ZOOM and you are on mute, we saw the majority of our cadets at least once a week and the national sea cadets put on lots of virtual opportunties which our cadets took up,

We missed our boating season but cadets were keen to be back face to face in September although it wasnt quite how it was , it was great to see them all and wow how they had all grown

2020 finished with the unit , hoping for a better 2021 

Local woman achieves unprecedented success at Sea Cadets

Poppy Martin,18 from Southampton has achieved almost every conceivable accolade as a Sea Cadet having joined Southampton Sea Cadets in 2015 aged 13. In 2020 Poppy was made a First Sea Lord Cadet at an investiture on board HMS Victory, one of only six such cadets in the country. As part of that role Poppy represented cadets at a range of high level conferences and meetings.

While gaining a plethora of qualifications including First Aid, Catering, Seamanship she has also attained several boating qualifications including coxswain, power boating & kayaking. With a passion for Drill she quickly rose to the highest cadet rate of Petty Officer Cadet. She was also made Mayors Cadet for Southampton in 2018 and in 2019 the Lord Lieutenants Cadet for Hampshire attending events with the Lord Lieutenant before Covid restriction hit home.

Sea Cadets is open to young people from age 9, and Poppy joined the Southampton unit in Vespasian Rd Southampton aged 13 while at Upper Shirley High School. Poppy said she wanted to join cadets earlier as her Mum was a cadet and since making the decision her Sea Cadet career had gone from strength to strength.

Poppy now attends Itchen College and is undertaking a BTec in Uniformed Public Services with a view to following a career in the Police or Nursing.

“The best bit of cadets is its one big family.” Said Poppy;

“I have met so many new people, made many friends and done things I could not have dreamed of.”

Although Poppy turned 18 in December  and is no longer a cadet she is training and converting to a staff member at the Southampton unit.

Lt Lindsay Bassett RNR Commanding Officer at Southampton Sea Cadets added:

“We are very proud of Poppy and delighted that she is staying on and transferring to staff. We are also keen to recruit new staff and anyone wanting to help out directly with cadets or behind the scenes would be very welcome.”

While marine based skills would be an asset we are keen to recruit people with commitment and enthusiasm so for those wanting to make a News Years resolution to get involved in the community this would be ideal.”
