District Training Weekend

District Training Weekend

It was another busy weekend for Southwark with PO Whitfield and PO Szmidt hosting a District Band Induction Course. Cadets from Greenwich attended in addition to four experts from Southwark. Sounds of drums, bugles and flutes (although no Bell Lyres this time) could be heard throughout the Aylesbury Estate. During the weekend tunes included reference to the Lambeth Walk and Old Kent Road in addition to more traditional military music. Neighbours were up early on Sunday to listen, or complain, but all involved had an enjoyable and worthwhile intensive period of training.

At the same time Harry Tutt and David Osaigbovo travelled to Sutton SC Unit for a Junior Sea Cadet training weekend. They were involved in many activities associated with the Junior Training Programme and gained the Heartstart qualification.

And finally, for Nathaniel McQueeni and Romaii Smart it was off to HMS Raleigh for 5 days of intensive training on the Naval Acquaint Course, will we ever see them again (everyone visiting Raleigh wants to stay longer).

Another Sunday in January and it was off to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset. It was a long journey to the museum situated alongside RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron) but well worth the trouble for excellent displays of aircraft and their operation at sea. In February it will be another educational, but fun, outing to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard together with the RN Submarine Museum at Gosport.

Another early fixture in January was the 5-a-side football competition.

This year Southwark mustered a senior girls team which, under the leadership of Amy Rawlins finished a close second to Sutton Unit.

Next the Junior Sea Cadet mixed teams created a strong competition with overall winners Orpington only just finishing ahead of the Southwark team.

Additionally Nathaniel McQueenie defected to Merton unit helping them to finish 3rd in the junior male event.

No trophies this year but many medals and even more goals (mostly for rather than against).

January 2012 - On the River

January 2012 - On the River

At high water in the afternoon of Sunday 3 June 2012, up to a thousand boats muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty The Queen to lead the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. It will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. The Sea Cadets are to take on a major role providing 54 Trinity 500 craft to carry the Commonwealth national flags.

Ten Trinity 500 rowing craft assembled alongside Putney Unit and proceeded down river to Greenwich Yacht Club for an early rehearsal for this prestigious event. During the rehearsal the boat carrying the Commonwealth flag was crewd by Southwark with PO Whitfield, Callum Malone, Benjamin Wood, Joshua McBride and Alfie Button.

Area Advancement Board

Able Cadet Benjamin Wood and Leading Cadet Callum Malone recently attended an Area Advancement Board at HMS President. As a result Ben has gained advancement to Leading Cadet and Callum to Petty Officer Cadet. Joshua McBride also attended to see how it all works and will return in March 2012 when he expects to gain the highest pass marks for the year but in the meantime will continue to concentrate on his bugling and drumming.
