Stratford upon Avon may be miles from the sea but Junior Sea Cadets at TS Gurkha now know all about the dangers that they may encounter by sea after they were visited by the RNLI.
Mr & Mrs Knight, RNLI volunteers, brought along helmets, wellies, buoyancy aids and protective clothing worn by the crews of the RNLI’s lifeboats around the country. They also explained to the cadets the dangers of the sea, rip tides, using inflatables and the craze of tombstoning (jumping in a vertical posture into the sea from rocks or cliffs.)
Officer in Charge of Juniors, APO Drinkwater, was full of praise for the RNLI visitors. ‘Our cadets are used to having fun in the water, so it is really important that they also know of the dangers and the RNLI volunteers that are there to keep them safe.’
The cadets also learnt the meaning of the beach lifeguard flags and what to do if they see someone in trouble.
Junior Cadet Libby Cooke, aged 11 really enjoyed the visit. ‘It was a very informative night’ she said. ‘The visitors explained how the RNLI works with lots of interesting stories and facts. My favourite thing was the game we played where we had to spot the dangers.’
Open to children aged 10-12yrs, the Junior Sea Cadet Section at Stratford upon Avon meet every Thursday night. Juniors work towards badges, gaining useful skills and knowledge. Many of the Juniors join the senior Sea Cadets when they reach their 12 birthday.
