On 10th & 11th May 2014, we were the only uniformed youth group to support the Tynemouth Food Festival. We were delighted to have been asked because it is such a prestigious event in the local community, and people travel from far and wide to attend - all set in the historic Tynemouth Priory. Despite a couple of showers, there were thousands of people there and we ensured the smooth running of the event by checking pre paid tickets, selling tickets on the door, issuing wristbands and handing out the free brochures....as well as enjoying some delicious food! We have been bombarded with positive feedback about our cadets, and have managed to recruit some more young people as a result. Thank you to the event organisers for inviting us, the stall holders for making us feel so welcome, our volunteers and finally to our cadets and those from Newcastle East and Newburn who all worked so hard - we'll see you next year!

On 27 June 2014, Sally Craigen (pictured below right) representing the Tynemouth Food Festival visited our unit and presented us with a very generous financial donation, as a way of saying thank you to our cadets. Well done and thank you to all our cadets and adult volunteers who helped out.

On 7th May 2014, we welcomed over 60 guests at our biennial Royal Naval Parade. This involved an inspection of the cadets by Captain Peter Adams of the Royal Navy and then an opportunity for our cadets to show off their nautical skills.

Officer in Charge Lieutenant Jane Fox said, “ We really appreciate the support from the local community and special thanks go to some of our funders and supporters who were present which includes trustees from the Mel Weir Charitable Trust, Whitley Bay Rotary Club, the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear Mrs Ruth Thompson OBE, the Chairman of North Tyneside Council Councillor Janet Hunter,Iain Riddell from the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, North Tyneside’s Young Mayor Allen Oghene and North Tyneside Council’s Youth Participation Officer Anne Taylor. The Unit is going from strength to strength with this invaluable support and we are extremely grateful.”

April 2014 saw Whitley Bay Sea Cadets receive more good news in the form of a grant from Sport Relief. The funds will be used to take our cadets on two boating weekends to Derwenthaugh Boat Station which will enable them to gain some boating qualifications, and have some fun on the water. Thank you to our funders for such a fantastic opportunity.

On Wednesday 30 April 2014, we were really fortunate to be able to welcome the Royal Marine Visibility Team to our Unit. The Royal Marine Commandos put us through our paces with a variety of team building exercises, and we were also joined by our friends from Newcastle East Sea Cadets. It could not have been further from a normal parade night! Thank you to our guests for their visit.

On 5 April 2014, we participated in a community awareness event at the 1 year birthday of the new Whitley Bay Library on York Road. Our cadets busied themselves talking to local people and handing out postcards, flags and stickers. In fact, they spoke to 296 people and probably needed some quiet time after all that talking! Thank you to all our cadets who took part, they represented our Unit with finesse.
