ALL ABOARD HMS DAUNTLESS FOR WHITLEY BAY SEA...

ALL ABOARD HMS DAUNTLESS FOR WHITLEY BAY SEA...

Whitley Bay Sea Cadets were invited on board HMS Dauntless when she berthed at Northumbria Quay, North Shields on Saturday 29 March 2014. The ship became affiliated to the City of Newcastle taking over the mantel when HMS Newcastle was decommissioned in 2005, and is the second of the Type 45 destroyers after having joined the Fleet in November 2010 shortly after being the first of class to fire the new Sea Viper missile.

Lt Jane Fox, Commanding Officer of Whitley Bay Sea Cadets said “ We were thrilled to have received an invitation from the Commanding Officer of HMS Dauntless to tour the ship, and our cadets had an amazing afternoon. Despite each Sea Cadet Unit being a charity in its own right, the ethos and traditions of the Royal Navy who are our biggest supporter, are at the heart of the Sea Cadets and who are guided in all that they do by the values of respect, loyalty, self-discipline, commitment, honesty and integrity. Our aim is to inspire young people through nautical adventure and challenge to help give them a head start in life.”

Thank you to everyone who made our ships visit so enjoyable.

Whitley Bay Sea Cadets has been awarded £3,809 by the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland towards the cosmetic renovation of its headquarters. The cadet force is now calling on volunteers from the local community to come forward and help with the painting and decorating of the headquarters to assist the young cadets in restoring the unit to its former glory on 12 and 13 April.

Lt Jane Fox, Commanding Officer said:

“We are thrilled and feel very humbled to have been given this amazing opportunity. Our unit is in dire need of cosmetic renovation to reflect the vibrant and exciting opportunities we offer young people from our region. We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and get started”.

Su Legg, Fund Development Manager at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland added:

“The grant from the Community Foundation will provide a more welcoming and attractive place for young people and volunteers to access the Sea Cadet headquarters. Whitley Bay Sea Cadets provide a vital service for young people in our region and we would like to ask that the local community supports the project by offering their free time to paint and decorate the unit. Whether this is an office team building day or an individual with a spare hour on a Sunday, the group will appreciate any kind support that you may be able to offer.”

Sea Cadets are set to benefit from a share of a £10 million Government investment it was announced in today’s budget by the Chancellor George Osborne.

As part of the Youth United network, groups like the Sea Cadets are thrilled to see the investment the Government is making in young people. Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, says:

“We want to ensure that young people have the best possible opportunity to develop the skills they need as they move into adulthood. One of the ways that we can do that is by increasing the opportunities they have to engage in social action and this fund will provide an enormous boost to that effort.”

Martin Coles, CEO for Sea Cadets said:
“We are delighted to see such significant investment and recognition in young people and we welcome today’s announcement and look forward to increasing the incredible opportunities we can offer to even more young people, helping them to build positive futures for themselves and their communities”

WHITLEY BAY SEA CADET SELECTED FOR TS ROYALIST...

Congratulations to Leading Cadet Brass who has been selected for a Youth United funded trip on TS Royalist. LC Brass, along with 23 others from uniformed youth groups will live, sleep and crew Royalist from 7 -13 June 2014 from Newcastle to Inverness. Given LC Brass' plans to pursue a career in engineering, we're sure this will be an amazing opportunity for her.

Since 1971 the Sea Cadets flagship has been taking cadets to sea where they can experience the most exhilarating and unique challenges. Whether it’s hoisting the sails in stormy weather or navigating big waves, nothing compares to the feeling of being out at sea, right there in the elements, taking on challenging nautical training and pulling together with other cadets to safely navigate Britain’s coastline. This is teamwork taken to another level. TS Royalist is open to all our cadets - please see our Training Officer for more information.
