NEW FLAGSHIP DESIGN SAILS THROUGH WIND TUNNEL...

NEW FLAGSHIP DESIGN SAILS THROUGH WIND TUNNEL...

27/11/2013

A 1:15 scale model of Sea Cadets new flagship sailed through wind tunnel tests at the University of Southampton. Shipbuilders, Astilleros Gondan, and the Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics Wolfson Unit put the fully rigged model (approximately 2m long and 1.6m high) through sail optimisation and performance trials in the large, low speed section of the university's wind tunnel. Watched by Sea Cadets during their offshore voyage on TS Royalist, the model ship was tested at different wind angles, with rig configurations from full sail to bare poles. The test proved that the mast position and centre of effort, sail size and shape, brace and sheet leads is correct and successful.

The new flagship will launch the sailing season in March 2015! Find out more about our new Ship Appeal

Step Up to Serve, a brand new campaign launched today by HRH, The Prince of Wales and all three political parties, pledges to increase opportunities for young people in their local community to improve their sense of belonging, emotional wellbeing, educational outcomes and career prospects.

As part of this campaign Youth United, a network of voluntary youth organisations, is pledging to offer 40,000 places for young people to join Sea Cadets, and other youth groups including Air and Army Cadets, Scouts and GirlGuiding UK.

This pledge will enable young people to join Sea Cadets to give them the best possible head start in life. Sea Cadets and other youth organisations are working together to encourage young people, particularly in disadvantaged communities, to learn new life skills such as communication, team work and problem solving.

150 Sea Cadets from across the UK took part in the Lord Mayor’s Parade on Saturday 9 November in London, to celebrate the arrival of the 686th Lord Mayor. It is the world’s largest unrehearsed parade through the city.

Despite the rain thousands of people lined up the streets of London, not to mention the millions of people watching on TV, were treated to the National Band of the Sea Cadets Corps! Sea Cadets were on a branded float waving to the crowds as well as a marching platoon on either side of the float.

Look at all the photos from the parade on the Sea Cadets UK Facebook page.

On Sunday 10 November, 10 Sea Cadets have the privilege to be part of the national Remembrance Sunday service joining the Royal Family and political party leaders at the Cenotaph Parade in Whitehall, London. Sea Cadets will lay a wreath on the war memorial on behalf of the charity.

Staffordshire Sea Cadets are taking part in the route line up at National Memorial Arboretum at their outdoor service on Monday 11 November. Sea Cadets will be joining Army and Air Cadets to line the steps of the Centre of Remembrance.
