Royal Navy Parade on the 4th July 2011

Dunstable Sea Cadet Royal Navy Parade on the 4th July 2011 received a Burgee

Annually, units are assessed, and then compared against Sea Cadet Units across the whole of the UK, which ranges at roughly 450 units. These awards are made in three basic categories: 1. no award, indicating that the unit is below acceptable standards; 2. Pennant, indicating that the unit is operating effectively; and 3. Burgee, which is awarded to the top achievers nationally.

It has been 25 years since TS Lionel Preston has received this prestigious award and also, this is only the third time in the 70 years in which Dunstable has been part of the Sea Cadets.

The Inspecting Officer was the Area Officer for Eastern Area, who has jurisdiction over some 60 plus units ranging from Hertfordshire to Yorkshire, Commander E. Langley RN. The inspection itself was the first time in which the Commander had visited the unit and in report to the evening commented; “In sum, this has been a superb year in which everyone has pulled together to deliver a much improved experience for the Cadets. The Staff are highly motivated, well led and capable and I have no hesitation is recommending you for a Burgee - which after No Award last year is a great achievement. Very well done.”

The evening began with a guard of honour for the inspecting Officer, and the opening parade, known as colours. The commander then received a tour of the Unit from one of the cadets, Petty Officer Cadet Whitten. During this time the cadets setup for their evolution, which is a display of the skills the cadets have learnt over the past year, with added humour and fun.

10 July 2010

Houghton Regis Carnival

A good number of our cadets took part in the Carnival Procession this year, pulling the Gun and Limber. The Procession started from Parkside Drive Recreation Ground at 10.30am, reaching The Green via Tithe Farm Road at around 12 Noon. The cadets really had their work cut out just after Tithe Farm School - pulling the gun and limber on the flat is one thing, getting it up the hill is quite another - especially on a hot day! At the green they paraded past the Town Mayor Cllr Robin Hines who officially opened the carnival and awarded prizes. Our cadets got Third Prize - a just reward for all their sterling efforts.

26 June 2010

ASDA Bag Pack

Cadets, staff and volunteers gave of their best on this very hot and sticky day.

Having started at 10am, by 4pm all were worn out.

The result was marvellous though, with over £900 being raised for the Unit.

Congratulations to all!!

AGM - 15 JUNE 2010

This year our AGM was held on Tuesday 15 June at 7.30

TThis year's event marked the end of the first year in office of both the Officer in Charge, Gary Sewell, and the Chairman of the Management Team, David Abbott. They both be presented reports on events over their year of office, and achievements made.

Particular mention was made of our replacement 17 seater minibus, and a grant of £750 from Houghton Regis Town Council for new fold-away tables.

We have a Pennant! - 8 August 2009

The unit received from Headquarters the prestigious award of a Pennant.

Only 40% of the best units in the country receive this honour, and we understand that we were only 2% below receiving a Burgee - the highest general award a unit can get.

The Pennant is a physical recognition of the hard work and dedication over the last year of the cadets themselves, as well as the staff and committee.

Congratulations to all!!!

Flag Day - 1 August 2009

A Flag Day in Dunstable town centre with the aim of both raising some money for the Unit's activities, and also encouraging new members to join the Unit.

With the kind permission of ASDA, we had a display outside their main entrance. This included our RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) which is power boat with lots of horses in the engine. It is normally kept and used at the big lake at Stewartby, and it certainly licks through the water.

We think it is true to say that other local Units are a bit envious of our 'flag ship'!

Royal Naval Parade - 13 July 2009

We had one of the most important events of a unit - our Royal Naval Parade. It is something that doesn't happen every year.

On this occasion Commander Watt RN inspected the cadets and he will have a full guard of honour.

As well as the Mayor of Dunstable, and the Deputy Mayor of Houghton Regis, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire was also in attendance, and she was also invited to inspect the Cadets.

The evening was a great success, and good marks were given to the cadets for the evolutions (displays) they undertook.

For more information (nearly a full page report!) see the 29th July 2009 edition of the Dunstable Gazette

Trafalgar Day Parade - 26 October 2008

A number of our Cadets took place in the Trafalgar Day parade this year.

Dunstable Gazette Reports on Parade

"Proud parade marks Dunstable's landmark date"

"Traffic comes to a standstill as 900th anniverary celebration hits the streets."

Crowds lined the streets as a big parade by cadets in Dunstable on Saturday 8th September 2007 celebrated the 900th anniversary of the founding of the town.

Traffic in the town centre was brought to a standstill as the air, army and sea cadets marched to exercise their Freedom Of Entry to Dunstable.

The Freedom Of Entry grants the right to march through the town with "drums beating and colours flying".

Dunstable air, army and sea cadets were awarded the right in 2000, to acknowledge their services to the community.

The cadets were led by the band of the Sea Cadet Biggleswade Detachment along the route.

And the salute was taken at the Dunstable Town Council offices, Grove House, in High Street North.

AREA DRILL & PIPE COMPETITION

On the weekend of the 24/25th February 2007, 11 cadets from Dunstable, 1 cadet from Luton & 1 cadet from Bedford, formed a 13 person Guard and entered the Eastern Area Armed Guard Competition.

This was part of the Eastern Area drill and pipe competition held at Newark showground, and the cadets had qualified for this competition by winning the district Armed Guard Competition in December 2006.

The standard of the competition was high and even though this was our first time of entering the competition, we came a very close second only missing 1st place by the smallest of margins.

All the cadets who took part should be extremely proud of themselves as are the staff of the unit’s concerned. The cadets would like to send their thanks to T.I. Gutteridge whom without this would not have been possible.

The cadets in question are:-

L/C COOPER
L/C HAGGER

Dagnall School Fete

On the 12th May 2007 we were invited by Dagnall school to attend their fete and carry out our Drill and Gun Run displays.

A great time was had by all and the displays were a great success.

Although for the second year running we had showers on and off all day.

Highlight of the day from a staff point of view a lovely cup of hot tea.

Highlight of the day from a cadet point of view, having the opportunity to display their skills and community spirit.

Cold / wet but great fun

Dunstable Carnival 2007

The theme of this years carnival was 900 Years Of Dunstable, the cadets were asked to come up with thier own ideas for the float.

As usual the cadets and staff threw themselves into the event.

Staff/Committee/Parents at the Dunstable Unit are proud of the cadets and a day like the Dunstable Carnival re-enforces that pride.

Many thanks to T.J.Robins for yet again providing us with the vehicle and a special thank you to our Chairman Mr Malcolm Cooper for getting us around the street circuit safely
