Armed Forces Day - 2013

Armed Forces Day - 2013

On Saturday 22nd June Falmouth held Cornwall's annual Armed Forces Day. Our unit took part in the parade and helped with the District Recruitment Stand. Unit staff also helped in the organisation of the day, having to attend several meetings leading up to the event. Unfortunately the programmed flying display could not take place due to the low cloud base, but the crowds did see a display by the RNLI and the Search and Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. There was also a Concert in the evening by the Royal Marine bad, which the cadets also attended.

WPA Launch at Stithians Lake

WPA Launch at Stithians Lake

On 28th April 2013 at Stithians Lake, the Lord Lieutenant for Cornwall and Sarah Newton MP along with WPA representatives and Captain Sea Cadets attended a ceremony to bless the new boats provided by WPA funding. Cadets from the five Cornish units (Falmouth & Penryn, Penzance, St Austell, Truro and Padstow) took to the water for their maiden voyage after the blessing.

"This project goes beyond the Cornwall's 140 cadets by offering taster sailing days; the more I’ve learnt about Sea Cadets, the more I am in awe of the dedication of their volunteers.’  Charlie McEwan director of good causes for the Western Provident Association (WPA) Benevolent Foundation, who made the donation, said: "WPA Benevolent Foundation promotes healthy activity amongst the young and following the Sea Cadets performance at the Jubilee River Pageant last year, we were inspired to evolve a Cornwall project to develop the sailing centre at Stithians Lake and fund scholarships for cadets to experience a voyage offshore."

RFA Lyme Bay Visit - April 2013

From 2nd to 5th April 2013, some of our cadets (and our minibus) were invited to stay onboard RFA Lyme Bay for a sea trip to Portland.  Unfortunately, due to a mechanical problem, the ship only moved across Falmouth Harbour from one wharf to another.  The cadets still had a great time and had a taste of life on board an RFA ship.

On Saturday 16th February 2013, five more members of our Unit staff gained their RYA Marine VHF Radio Short Range Certificate.  This is crucial for the boatwork events we conduct, enabling crew-to-crew communication and, if necessary, emergency communications with the Coastguard.   Well done to PO Mitchell, PO Howle, CI Holden, UA Pearce and UA Jorey.
