Whilst Luton Sea Cadets and the Royal Marines Cadet Detachment were at the District Drill Competition, the new Troop Commander, Captain (SCC) S. Smith RMR took the opportunity to present a special award to one of Luton's Royal Marines Cadets.

The Jock Slaven memorial trophy is presented every year to the Corporal who gains the highest score on the Corporal's Promotions Board that year. X-Ray Company hold two such boards, one in June and one in November. In 2012, both Corporal's Boards were topped by a Luton Cadet, Corporal Kieran Ayers in June and Corporal Edward Spraggon-Quinn in November. Corporal Ayers' score was the highest and so was presented the trophy by Captain Smith at the drill. This is a particularly special achievement as Corporal Ayers had previously topped the Lance Corporal board the previous November, for which he won the equivalent award for best Lance Corporal in 2011. Bravo Zulu.

Both Sea Cadets and Royal Marines cadets entered into the Bedfordshire District Drill Competition this weekend at Dunstable Unit. This is the first time the competition has been run since the re-drafting of the District boundaries and also the first with the re-drafting of the Troop boundaries for Royal Marines Cadets.

The Sea Cadet squad entered into the Sea Cadet Unarmed Squad Competition. The team, consisting of OC Yeomans, AC Perry, Cdt Friar, Cdt Loveland, Cdt K. Smith, AC A. Smith, AC Ayles, OC Murphy, LC Newell, OC Egan, Cdt Esser, AC Evans and lead by LC Frost, faced added competition this year as due to the removal of the Armed Guard competition, additional unarmed squads had been entered. The squad put on a very good display for the Area Staff Officer (Ceremonial) Lt Cdr (SCC) P. Waring RNR, a vast improvement over last year and finished fourth.

The Royal Marines Cadet troop entered into the Royal Marines Cadet Unarmed Troop Competition. The team, consisting of Cpl Ayers, Cpl Loveland, Cpl Salmon, Cpl Spraggon-Quinn, MC2 Perry, MC2 Willis and lead by L/Cpl Matthews were competing for both District and Troop prizes. The team performed an excellent routine under the watchful eye of new Troop Commander Capt (SCC) S. Smith RMR. The team won the Bedfordshire District Best RMC Guard Trophy and Best Guard Commander, both for the second year in a row, and narrowly come runners up in the Troop Competition. The RMC team will now combine with Welwyn Garden City to form a 12+1 Guard for the Area Competition.

Twenty Four of Luton’s Sea Cadets, Royal Marines Cadets and Junior Sea Cadets took part in a charity bag pack this afternoon to raise money for the unit. The cadets spent four hours in the supermarket during the busy Christmas rush, helping customers to pack their shopping. Additionally, L/Cpl Matthews and OC Spread wearing their best uniform manned the advertising stall, handing out leaflets and raising the profile of the Sea Cadets. The total amount raised was £668 and change.

Unlike our colleagues in other cadet forces, we do not receive money from the Ministry of Defence. We are responsible for raising the money to keep the unit afloat, and events like this are a vital part of keeping our unit going. This Friday the uniforms, ceremonial and training were all put on hold as we hosted the Luton Sea Cadets 2012 Christmas Party. It was a well earned for cadets to let their hair down after a hard summer filled with camps, courses, field assessments, competitions and training. Activities included a disco, games and of course Twister.

Food for the night was provided by the 3rd Class Cook Steward class, who have to cater for a finger buffet as part of their assessment. Lt (SCC) Haines RNR assessed her team of five cadets as their catered for the entire unit. All cadets who took part in the assessment have passed and should be awarded their 3rd Class award in the near future.

A huge thank you to A/PO (SCC) Dennehy, PCI Stevens, LC Frost and AC Evans for helping to arrange the evening and set everything up.

Two cadets from Luton unit joined forced with cadets from Dunstable unit this Sunday to represent Bedfordshire District at the Eastern Area 5-a-side Football Competition. Having performed exceedingly well at the district competition, Cadet Frier and Cadet Esser were chosen to support the District's Junior Boys and Junior Girls teams at the Area Competition at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire.

The competition was fierce and both teams did extremely well. BZ to all involved.
