Well done to Cdt Loveland, LC Frost, OC Esser and Cdt Esser who emerged victorious from their categories, and will proceed to the Area Regatta. Overall, Luton unit was the runner up, narrowly missing out on the overall trophy.

This weekend was the assessment of the Sea Cadet Adventure Leaders course, held by the Area Staff Officer for Adventure Training. The first half had been hosted at Luton in April, and now A/PO (SCC) Dennehy and A/Sgt (SCC) Morgan travelled to Leeds to be assessed. The weekend brought true hiking weather, which is to say it was cold, foggy and rained a lot. Both candidates passed their Sea Cadet Adventure Leaders qualification, enabling them to take groups out walking and camping. Additionally, they qualified as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Supervisors and HeartStart providers. Well done to both.

Unit Easter Camp (Take 2)

Unit Easter Camp (Take 2)

08/05/2013
Having had the first Easter Camp called off due to the snow and ice, Luton Unit rescheduled their annual Easter Camp for this weekend. Thankfully the weather remained nice and warm for this event. This camp was a joint venture between Luton and Welwyn Garden City. Cadets from both units worked towards their BCU 1*, their RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Level 1, their RYA Powerboat Level 2 or their Rowing Competent Crew / Supervised Coxswain. The weather was great, and a good time was had by all. This was also the first big external camp run with the new boats that were brought earlier this year. The boats were a great success and even the CO and 1st Lt got to have a go. The unit’s RMCD were also the ground, with three days spent in the field learning advanced fieldcraft before joining the sea cadets on the water, as they took the Powerboats out for a spin.

Work Begins on Luton's New Galley!

Work Begins on Luton's New Galley!

Last December the Chairman, Mr Simkins, managed to earn the unit a grant of £10,000 to refurbish the Galley. The aim is to create a new integrated kitchen with all the appliances on the Mess Deck and remove the kitchen from the accommodation block which can then be expanded in the future. Work has now begun on this project, with Mr Simkins, the Commanding Officer CPO (SCC) Brogan, and UMT Member Mr Matthews leading the way. Once finished, this will increase the capacity for Luton Sea Cadets to cater for our courses, provide a nicer Mess Deck for cadets during stand easy and allow for future expansion of the accommodation block.

Marines Brave the Snow for Easter Camp

Marines Brave the Snow for Easter Camp

Despite the snow, the Easter weekend saw seven cadets from Luton’s RMCD travel up to Beckingham for Easter Camp. Kitted out with as much warm kit as they could, the cadets spent two days in the field.

MC Dudley and MC2 Lewis completed Exercise First Step on the Basic Cadre. They spent two days on the training area learning basic camp-craft, field-craft and soldiering. Additionally both completed Heart Start, though unfortunately there was no time to do the Obstacle Course.

Cpl Loveland, Cpl Salmon, MC2 Spraggon-Quinn, MC2 Matthews and MC2 Perry were all on the Signals Cadre, learning all about Combat Signals as well as Bowman and Clansmen radios. Affectionately referred to as ‘Walking and Talking’, MC2 Perry and Cpl Loveland completed the Basic Signals qualification, whilst the other three having done this previous progressed to Advanced Signals.
