This weekend was the training weekend for the Area Regatta. Those who emerged victorious from the District Regatta now form the Bedfordshire District team for Area Regatta. Five cadets from Luton attended this weekend, to practice for the real thing next weekend. Despite the incredibly hot weather, (temperatures hit 33 degrees) the cadets took part in race training, refined their skills and concluded with various water-borne fun and games including a cadet version of canoe polo and chariot races.

Fundraising at Tescos!

Every little did help this Sunday, as it was the first of Luton unit’s two annual bag packs. As the unit is an independent charity, we are responsible for raising our own money. Whilst we have been very successful in winning grants, these are for specific purposes and cannot be used for utility bills, and general training supplies and equipment for cadets. Therefore it is vital to participate in fund-raising events. This bag pack was held at Tesco in Dunstable. The unit fielded a strong continguent that over the course of 5 hours, raised £864.47. A huge thank you to all staff and cadets.

The team of six from Luton travelled to Eastern Area Boat Station, Thrapston near Kettering for a weekend on the water. Activities on offer included rowing, kayaking, sailing and team building exercises. Well done to the team who gained their PaddlePower Start qualifications.

A small team of cadets and staff attended the annual school fete at Cardinal Newman School in Luton this weekend. The team manned the Luton Sea Cadets recruitment stand that was set up amongst the many stalls present at the fete. Highlights included the Luton Sea Cadets against Luton Fire Station tug of war (we came second) and rifle drill using the balloon rifles and sword manufactured by the Balloon-Animals stall next door. This was a fantastic chance to engage with the community, and a fantastic achievement considering it was organised by cadets with only 72 hours notice. A huge thank you to MC1 Perry for bringing this to our attention and organising the event.

A huge thank you to the cadets who turned up to support the unit and raise out public profile.

Five of Luton’s Royal Marines Cadets travelled to Beckingham this weekend to be assessed for their MC1 and Cadet Corporal’s exams. Despite the heat, the cadets took to the field to be tested on field craft, map reading, corps knowledge. After a hard days testing, they returned to camp, so prepare their blues for the drill inspection on Sunday morning. Congratulations to MC1 Perry, MC1 George, MC1 Willis and Corporal Matthews. MC1s having proved their subject matter knowledge must now take charge and prove their leadership skills in order to achieve promotion to Lance Corporal.
