First Leading Cadet in Luton in over a Year.

Congratulations to Able Cadet Zoe Newell on her promotion to Leading Cadet. LC Newell attended the Bedfordshire District Advancement Board, which was held at Luton Unit this weekend. Over the course of the weekend, LC Newell was assessed in Drill, Power of Command, Uniform, Leadership, Instructional Methods, and Corps Knowledge by the assessment team lead by District Officer, Lt Cdr (SCC) Bob Knight RNR. Leading Cadet Newell achieved a Credit Pass, the highest category pass that a cadet can achieved. Leading Cadet Newell is now the most senior cadet in the unit. Bravo Zulu, Leading Cadet.

Luton Marines Complete Sponsored Speed March

Luton Royal Marines Cadets this weekend completed a sponsored speed march to raise money for the new X-Ray Company Colour, which is to be presented at Summer Camp. With a goal of £100, the Royal Marines Cadets gathered all the sponsorship they could. The event took place at Luton unit, under the direction of Detachment Command Sgt (SCC) Lancaster. The event as run along similar lines as the speed marches done by the Royal Marines Commandos during the Commando Tests, but shorted to a length of 5km. The cadets completed the event in just over an hour. Initial estimates show that the £100 target has easily been met.

Having won the District Drill & Piping Competition in December, the RMCD Drill Team have progressed forward to the Area Competition. With an updated drill display rehearsed and ready and new members of the Drill Team, Luton were brimming with confidence as they headed up to Beckingham with the rest of Bedfordshire district.

The team put in an excellent performance. They were inspected by Captain (SCC) Smith RMR, before moving on to their armed and unarmed drill display where they were judged by the Company Sergeant Major WO2 (SCC) Marsland RMR and Sgt (SCC) Dowsett. The team did extremely well and Luton's Commanding Officer CPO (SCC) Brogan was very proud of his team. Overall, Luton finished 4th in the competiton, narrowly missing out on a podium place.

As 2011 draws to a close, Luton unit held a bit of a celebration for all the hard work throughout the year. It's been a hard year with ups and downs, but the cadets have all put in a lot of time and effort and the unit is growing because of it. Thanks to Miss Dennehy, A/Sgt Oxley, Miss Perry, Mr Williams and Lt Haines for organising the party food and games. Let the mayhem begin.

This year Luton entered two teams into the District Drill and Piping Competition, a 12+1 Sea Cadet Unarmed Squad lead by Able Cadet Newell and a 6+1 Royal Marines Cadet Armed Guard led by L/Cpl Loveland. The event was held at Cambridge and assessed by the Area Staff Officer Ceremonial for Eastern Area, Lt Cdr (SCC) Waring RNR. Teams were assess on their dress and bearing and then completed a set routine, including receiving a VIP and a march past, as well as a free drill display for the judges.

Both teams did very well, and the RMC Guard won the Best RMC Guard, and Best RMC Guard Commander for L/Cpl Loveland. They now progress through to Area Drill and Piping in January.
