Luton Sea Cadets Remember the Fallen

Luton Sea Cadets Remember the Fallen

14th November 2011
The whole of Luton Unit turned out today to remember the fallen heroes not only of the two World Wars, but also of the troops who have fallen in more recent conflicts and those serving on the front line in Afghanistan today. Immaculately presented in their best uniforms, the cadets from the Sea Cadet division, the Royal Marines Cadet division and the Junior Sea Cadet section march through the town to the cenetaph, where they took part in the service lead by the Royal British Legion's parade marshall, Flight Lieutenant Jim Lavery RAFVR(T). Once complete, the cadets march out to an ovation from the crowd, and retired for refreshments at the Royal British Legion. Those who read Luton Today will have noticed that several of our cadets appeared in the newspapers. Well done to all involved!

Luton Win District 5-a-Side!

Luton Win District 5-a-Side!

23rd October 2011
The Cambs and Beds District 5-a-side football competition was held this weekend. Luton unit entered several teams into the competition this year, including Senior Boys, Juniors Boys, a joint Junior Sea Cadets team (with Bedford unit), as well as supplying extra players for joint Senior Girls and Junior Girls teams. All cadets made a fantastic effort, and the results speak for themselves: the Seniors Boys won their category, bringing the trophy back to Luton for the first time in many years. The Junior boys came second in their category by a hair's breadth, after an incredibly close final that ended in a manner all England fans are well acquainted with: a penalty shoot-out. The Junior Sea Cadets who were part of the joint team with Juniors from Bedford unit, came third in their group. Both the Senior Girls and Junior girls from Luton were part of joint teams, and both came a close second.

Medals were presented to cadets by Lt Cdr (SCC) Knight RNR, the District Officer. Now it is on to Area 5-a-side in December for the Senior Boys.

Fundraising in Harpenden

Fundraising in Harpenden

22nd October 2011
Cadets from Luton braved the cold to take part in a street collection in Harpenden this weekend. The ten cadets spent four hours around Harpenden town centre raising money for the unit, and raising the unit's public profile as part of our latest recruitment campaign. Unlike our compatriots in the Army Cadets and Air Cadets, the Sea Cadets are not part-funded by the MOD, but rather each unit is an individual charity responsible for its own upkeep. Luton unit is currently saving for a Minibus, open canoes and field equipment for the Royal Marines Cadets, and the efforts this weekend will go straight towards these causes. The unit is most grateful to the cadets who gave up their time to raise money which will go straight towards equipment for them to use. Their conduct, deportment and morale was exceptionally high and the collection was very successful.

If you wish to support Luton Sea Cadets, follow the donations link. If you saw us in town and wish to become part of Luton Sea Cadets, Royal Marines Cadets or Junior Sea Cadets, come and see us on a parade night, or contact us.

Whilst on this occasion, Luton Unit was unable to field an promotions candidates, three cadets from the unit's Royal Marines Cadet detachment took part in the concurrent shooting activities over the weekend. MC2s Daniel Loveland, Joe Matthews, and Camden Nightengale represented the unit, getting the opportunity to hone their marksmanship skills. MC2 Loveland achieved the highest score of the weekend, beating off competition from cadets from Dunstable, Cambridge, Bedford, Biggleswade and Ampthil and Flitwick, with MC2 Nightengale closely following a single point behind. These are the first marksmanship badges gained in the unit for several years and we are delighted that shooting is returning to the unit.
