LONDON FLOTILLA

LONDON FLOTILLA

Cadets provided first class support for the final 'Haul down' ceremony of the London Flotilla. Bugler and colour party performed the ceremony of 'Sunset' on the embankment adjacent to the Little Ship Club.

Back in late 1936 the Admiralty created the Royal Naval Volunteer Supplementary Reserve from the ranks of amateur yachtsmen.  The locally based members were given shorebased training by the Club and it is for this service that they were given a Warrant to wear our Blue Defaced Ensign. Subsequently the London based members formed the London Flotilla and bought themselves a couple of naval picket boats for on-the-water training and went on to perform important work during the Second World War. The London Flotilla is now being disbanded due to dwindling membership and the surviving members have been invited to join us for this special evening.

The SCC, STC, ACF and ATC from around London were out in force to support the annual St George's Day parade in Whitehall which is organised by The Royal Society of St George. After the parade Petty Officer Cadet Benjamin Wood was seconded for further duties at Westminster Abbey where he assisted VIP’s during a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Other Southwark cadets attending were Alfie Button, Thomas Wood, Ronnie Francis, Harry Tutt and Danielle Watkins.

HMS BLAZER

Four cadets were recently invited aboard the P2000 vessel HMS Blazer for a tour and trip on the Thames. HMS Blazer is tendered to the University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) at Southampton Solent University, Portsmouth University and Southampton Institute but was visiting London so cadets only had to travel to HMS President situated in the shadow of Tower Bridge. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to work with the RN and learn about the work of URNU’s which are located throughout the UK.

2014 London Marathon

No doubt everyone has heard of the London Marathon but did you know that Southwark Sea Cadets have assisted at various water stations since its inception in 1980. And this year was no exception with TS Cossack cadets being one of a number of London Southern SCC units helping at the Quebec Way 9 mile station. And I expect to see Cadet PO's Benjamin Wood & Joshua McBride competing next year as they will be over 18 by then.
