NATIONAL AWARD FOR CALLUM MALONE

NATIONAL AWARD FOR CALLUM MALONE

It was a good end of the year for Petty Officer Cadet Callum Malone with the announcement of the Sea Cadet National Awards and Trophies for 2012 by Captain Sea Cadets, Captain Mark Windsor. The Southwark Sea Cadet had already earned an ILM Certificate in Leadership, BTEC Public Services, BTEC Music and Gold DofE Award during the year but recognition with the Commander Brown Award, for the cadet best fulfilling the aims of the Corps, was the cherry on top as well as quite a surprise. 2012 has been another busy year for Callum during which highlights have included coxing the Southwark Trinity 500 in the Queens Jubilee River Pageant and taking a place in the London Area Guard at the National Trafalgar Day Parade in nearby Trafalgar Square. Callum commented ‘I cannot deny that this award is very nice but nothing touches the pride felt in having such an important part in the River Pageant or being a member of that guard marching down the Mall to Trafalgar Square. My aim for the coming year is to see all TS Cossack cadets involved in spectacular events like these’. Callum is pictured discussing world affairs with Councillor Althea Smith, The Worshipful Mayor of Southwark during a recent visit to the Unit HQ.

Leading Cadet Benjamin Wood attended a powerboat planing course at Welsh Harp Boating Station. Already qualified for his RYA Power Level 2 Displacement, the next rung on the ladder for LC Wood was to gain the planing endorsement. After a day's training, he passed the assessment with ease. Next to aim for is the RYA Safety Boat qualification, but that will have to wait until after Christmas.

Visit from the Mayor of Southwark and the...

Councillor Althea Smith, Mayor of Southwark, and Mrs Jenny Bianco, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Southwark visited Southwark Sea Cadets on the evening of 04 December 2012.

During the evening, they joined parents to observe cadets taking part in different activities, including semaphore, music and seamanship. Our junior cadets also entertained them by performing a range of ropework magic tricks, which was positively received. These activities were complemented by a fine buffet, which was enjoyed by all.

At the end of the evening, the Mayor and Representative Deputy Lieutenant were invited to present a range of awards to the cadets. These included certificates and badges for specialisations in a range of subjects, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services and Music, and cadet advancement promotions.

On behalf of the cadets at the unit, they were thanked for their visit, and presented with a commemorative medallion which had been given to all cadets in celebration of the HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

On Remembrance Sunday, 11 November 2012, Southwark Sea Cadets marched behind veterans to Kennington Park Memorial. There, a short service was held, remembering those who "for our tomorrow, gave their today".

Able Cadet J McBride was proud to represent the unit as the Bugler, playing "The Last Post" and "Reveille" as the standards of the Royal British Legion were lowered and raised. Leading Cadet B. Wood laid a wreath on behalf of the unit, alongside those of other local associations.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."              - Laurence Binyon
