Tallow Chandlers Inspection

Tallow Chandlers Inspection

T.S. Cossack welcomed the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers at the unit on 19 March 2013.

Joined by parents and supporters of the unit, the guests saw cadets in action doing various seamanship challenges, and radio work, in addition to enjoying a flute performance by LC J McBride and AC S Cummins - the Master enjoyed it so much that he requested an encore!

The guests were also shown the unit's boats by PO Cdt B Wood and OC A Button, who talked through the various types of afloat activities that the unit is involved in.

At the end of the evening, the Master, Sir Michael Snyder, presented a number of awards to cadets, including Duke of Edinburgh's Award, BTEC, and sea cadet specialisations.

A medalion commemorating the Apollo 11 moon landing donated by Lieutenant Commander Tony Dalton RN has benefited unit funds. The medal was sold for £340 by Baldwwins at a recent auction which was far above the auctioneers estimate. After deductions this left £278, a very generous donation for which we are extremely grateful.

UNIT IMORTALISED ON CANVAS

It may be over six months since the Jubilee River Pageant but the Southwark unit Trinity 500 crew received a further reminder of that magnificent event. The artist James Milroy was commissioned by the BBC to produce paintings of the event. One of these paintings depicts the historic part the Sea Cadets played, flying the 54 flags of the Commonwealth in diamond formation in front of Her Majesty the Queen’s royal barge Gloriana. The original, commissioned by the BBC, has been generously donated to MSSC by the artist himself in recognition of the great work that the Sea Cadets do, and will shortly be taking pride of place at HQ.
