NATIONAL JUNIOR SUMMER CAMP

Harry Tutt and Dylan Neale spent a week of their summer holidays at Halton Army Camp in Lancashire. 10 to 12 ywar olds travell3ed from units throughout the UK to take part in the many and variedf activities on offer. While it was a long journey for some attending the opportunity to meet, live and work with cadets from all over the country was well worth the effort.

BEAT THE RETREAT

PO George Whitfield and PO Kerry Szmidt were honoured to receive complimentary VIP tickets from the Royal Marine School of Music for Beat the Retreat in Guildhall Square Portsmouth. The Royal Marines Bands are based in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Scotland, at the Commando Training Centre and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and their roles are to provide military bands, orchestras and dance bands for state occasions, major national and service events and for ship and shore ceremonial and social functions. The Band Service currently numbers about 400 men and women and its training school, Royal Marines School of Music, is based in Portsmouth.

AREA COOK STEWARD QUALIFYING COURSE

AREA COOK STEWARD QUALIFYING COURSE

Karol Andino and Sian Cummins were fortunate to secure a place on a Second Class Cook / Steward course. The 5 day course was based at Feltham SC Unit and the food was excellent (obviously). Both obtained high pass marks and good reports and are now keen to attend the 1st class course at the Royal Navy's training centre at HMS Raleigh in November.

OFF TO THE LONDON OLYMPICS

Joshua McBride and Sian Cummins were successfully nominated for two of only 50 pairs of tickets from Southwark Council. Groups were asked to describe how their nominee demonstrated at least one of the seven Olympic and Paralympic values of friendship; respect; excellence; equality; determination; inspiration and courage. The applications were then assessed by an independent panel. Both cadets were nominated for their work with T.S.Cossack S.C.C.

DISTRICT EXPEDITION TRAINING

DISTRICT EXPEDITION TRAINING

7 units from London Southern District converged on the Surrey countryside near Guildford for the District Expedition Training Competition. There was strong competition in the event involving teams of 6. Activities included map & compass work, campcraft & cooking, physical activity including route march & obstacle course and many leadership and teamwork tasks. At the end of a busy weekend Southwark Unit finished a close second to Bromley Unit. The two units will represent London Southern at the London Area Chosin Cup Competition in September.
